Hi Ottawans.. i know there are a few shooters from ottawa here since i noticed some sets in this forum from ottawa clubs...
wondering if you guys know if we need special permissions to shoot at the following:
1. live lounge
2. black sheep inn
3. zaphod
4. barrymores
5. rainbow
Or is it a case by case basis depending on the band?
Thanks guys!

Hey hey, I'm from Ottawa! So I guess that means me!?
I've shot all the venues except #2 and I've never had problems bringing in my gear or shooting. I've usually been invited by one of the bands though except for the live lounge they never seem to mind.
It never hurts to contact the venue though that way you get the right info straight from the source and you won't be in the position of saying well some guy on the internet said I could.
Just out of curiosity which bands events are you interested in shooting?
And just a heads up the lighting is going to be extremely tough without some primes or ISO 3200 and F2.8.
I think the rainbow was my favorite place to shoot in very natural even lighting.
The live lounge has very weired lighting. It's very difficult to shoot in.
Zaphods has tough lighting but a great atmosphere.
I really like shooting in Cafe dekcuf and Mavericks but The New Capital City Music hall has the best lighting in town I've shot. It's big but not too big to lose the small venue feel.
I started shooting the Big money contest last year and that is where I gained most of my experience but I haven't shot a BMS event yet this year. I'll be at the last BMS prelim round and hopefully the round three finals and grand finals.
I went last year to the finals and scored this shot of the winners Tim's Myth when they won.

It's really opened up some doors for me. Live already has two freelance shooters Switzer (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=90612544) and Matt (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=73729190&MyToken=d5e075fb-74f9-40f5-9c11-cf80c41b5bb6).
If you have a myspace account make sure to add me (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=68640185) as a friend. I love keeping in touch with local photogs.
If I can help with anything else let me know. :)

Thanks for the wealth of info. Appreciate you taking the time to reply.
Great shot! I dont know much about this contest -- would be fun to try it too.
I dont have myspace account but i'm sure we will bump into one another whilst shooting a gig:) i recognize your screen name -- i just changed mine to something less crass than jkoc. i've done some casual shooting around town but i wanted to get a feel for how formal i need to be in order to shoot in clubs.
