It's a bit "boxier" and squarier than G5.
I suppose that might help with lens not
intruding upon the optical viewfinder.
And why 7.1 mp? Same Pro1 8mp sensor
cut down to size to accomodate lens system?
If so, noise problem was worse in Pro1 than
G3/G5; is same lens system going to deliver
enough image quality? Except for vignetting,
Pro1 has much better lens.

That's smaller and lighter than the G5, and yeah, that's a pretty short lens.
Ehh, that FNAC article just got pulled, so I suspect it might have been a trap to get you on the site.

why would it only have a 3X optical zoom?
this makes little sense to me.

It had to be a fakie cuz it was silver *gack*
Canon knows real cameras only come in black

I'm not sure about FNAC just trying to pull people to their site ... after all, they're one of the major French brick-and-mortar department stores and most likely don't indulge in cowboy advertising like some 2-person internet shops ...
... funny though that obviously no one actually bothers to read the technical data in the article thorough enough (not even the author) ... they keep repeating the error that FNAC made in the first place ... a 35-140 is a 4x zoom and not a 3x zoom, like G3 and G5 users should well be aware of.

C'mon joey ... someone should inform you that real G series cameras are silver

ok so it's a 4x optical zoom. that still leaves it in the dust of most new cameras in the same price range. canon would have to be pretty stupid to make this camera. also that looks like a rendered drawing to me and not an actual pic of the camera. rendered = fake.

Wasn't the Pro1 picture released on the same website a month or two before
it was released by Canon?

Fnac is definitly not trying to pull our legs.
It's one of the big huge department stores in France, they wouldn't do anything stupid to trap us.
I am sure it's authentic, but it probably was an accident for them to post the details without Canon's authorization (i.e. if an authorization is required).
It looks pretty ugly as well.

I would add my voice to all those that think this picture and camera are real. The source was legit - so why would the picture and info be fake? You may not like it - it may not be what you were expecting - but neither of those things make that camera any less real. I guess that we will see.......

Yes, we'll all see it sooner or later
To me, 7.1 MP and 4x zoom makes a lot of sense from Canon's marketing standpoint... improvement (MP, not sure about noise,CA) over the G5, but not enough to threaten the position of the Pro1.
All the goodies of the G series ... swivel LCD, flash shoe, thread for conversion lenses ... and they made it a little more compact.
At the right price point (like the G5 at introduction) definitely a winner.
Best regards,
Andy

That second picture is a G2. While I would like to see a G7, being an owner of a G2 I know when I see a pic of it.

Imagine if they fixed all the problems of the Gx series.
1. Good Fast Autofocus
2. Usable ISO above 50
We can only dream.

Now that he mentions it, I also see a similarity ...
... but no, my G2 only has 4 MP, not 8 MP.
It must be the real thing

OK folks, this is intriguing. I live in Paris, and just happened to be at my favorite FNAC over lunch. They've finally pulled the G5 from the showcase and the catalog, BTW...
Here's what the message says when you follow the famous link mentionned :
Cet article n’est pour l’instant pas disponible Ã* la vente.
Il peut s’agir d’un problème temporaire, indépendant de Fnac.com, que nous nous efforçons de résoudre au plus vite

Hmmm. Sounds like a big oops. As a professional webmaster, I have inadvertently published products on my (unnamed) company's corporate web site, simply because the content management system is horribly complex, and sometimes pages get pushed onto the public server before the underlying content is validated (eg. problem with the workflow).
FWIW, FNAC is a huge, bluechip company, a mix of circuit city and barnes and noble. This ain't no hoax 8) but 'tis my opinion!

PS - wake me up when someone finally comes out with a full-frame digital rangefinder. Meanwhile, I love my G5

Wake Up!
Epsion came out with a digital rangefinder.
Got me! I was all over this revelation in March, then of course I bought my G5 and completely took a miss on the subsequent developments...
OK, make that - wake up me up when :
>There's actually a model in a store somewhere (B&H, FNAC :-))
>The price is known
>I can actually afford the price
So, when's the Canonet G-III Digital going to be announced?

Another premature release announcement? Or are they toying with us, trying to build up the anticipation?

I've seen these links now on nearly a dozen sites, so my guess is this was some temporary or test posting (for whatever reason), and when the links started getting flooded they pulled them. I wouldn't be surprised if someone's non-disclosure agreement gets yanked - or worse.
One site suggested the 20D would be announced by the end of the week, so hopefully they'll officially be back soon.
In the meantime, here's a link from someone who downloaded the pics: http://www.bernhard.us/photos/canon-leaks-082004. (Till it gets taken down from too much traffic...)

Guess you missed the (2003) year-end announcement from Canon that they were planning 20 new digicams for 2004. :D I haven't been counting since I bought my Nikon D70, but they're probably gonna need a silver G6 now and then a black G6 at year's end to fill out that plan -- and maybe a new concept "neon yellow" or "tied-dyed psychedelia" or maybe "ferrari/porsche branding" in between.
Anyway, a G6 in between S1 and Pro1 sounds reasonable to me. It's certainly more sensible than having a ton of different models w/in each series, ie. A, S, Elph, G, that have extremely few differences.
BTW, I finally checked out an 8MP cam locally (the Minolta A2 to be exact), and yuck(!) to the EVF on these beasts -- same goes for the one on the lesser models like Z3. The EVF is big yes, but mighty ugly rendering of the scene even in broad daylight.
