Not the best day to be at an air show but this one grabbed my attention.

I wouldn't post a title like this as it makes us think the pic is no good, and maybe a few peopel will over look, so be more confident! This shot is very nice indeed. It's like a glimpse into WWII.

Point taken Livinthalife. Title changed. (Edit: Bugger - no it's not - can't change the tread title)
Thanks

Great Spitfire pic! The monochromatic look definitely gives it the look of a picture from the British War Department archives! A Luftwaffe crewman's nightmare!

I love it...the only way that shot would be any better is if you could hear it...

Thanks All for the comments.
It looks like it pays to revisit shoots that you are disappointed with, later with a fresh mind. I'd written this day off initially as ALL the shots were too dark.
Thanks for looking.

I can't help but post this! British or not.. it's still Air Force!
Off we go into the wild blue yonder,
Climbing high into the sun;
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At 'em boys, Give 'er the gun! (Give 'er the gun now!)
Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,
Off with one helluva roar!
We live in fame or go down in flame. Hey!
Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force!

I think that this is more appropriate.
High Flight by John Gillespie Magee (1922-1941)
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies an laughter-silvered wings
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
Plt. Off. J. Magee died 11:30 Dec 11, 1941 in Spitfire V AD291. The above poem was penned 3 Sept 1941.

Definitely the most fitting for a Spitfire picture, nice work!

That was my first thought when I saw it.

Excellent capture of a Spit. Give it some grain and it really will have that WWII gun camera feel.

Gonna need more than "some grain" - add some mold/or acid degradation of some kind while you are at - hey, maybe someone here could right a "gun camera" plugin/filter/effect for Photoshop! That would be so cool!
I tried the afformentioned look the other night on a F4U Corsair pic from an airshow in May - I struggled to matched the war-worn look from real era photographs, but what do you think?

Looks close enough to me....just like one of the Corsairs from the Ba Ba BlackSheep book I have.

Ran it through Virtual Photographer plug-in and gave it ISO1600 grain and a sepia wash.

Whoa!! looking better....though the smoke puffs I think would look better if they were not so pronounced. Mybe blended together as if caught in the slipstream.

:D
Mate, next time we are at Temora, if that is the effect you want, I can make your sensor automatically capture the scratches and hair for you!
Good looking treatment - great how a written off shot can be reinvigorated.

::John:: - you wouldn't believe the amount of dust bunnies that I had to remove on the 1st image. I didn't think to clean the sensor on my 30D as that was it's 1st major day out. I will be watching you closely next time we shoot together, watching for the handfuls of Temora dust each time I change lenses. ;-)
3Turner - thanks for the positive comments.

I love the shot - it does give the feeling of what I would think it was like back during WWII. Thanks for posting!

adding the streaks and that little hair to the image definitely added some era authenticity! Very NICE!

I read Ba Ba Black Sheep too! Great book, crazy story! Pappy Boyington was quite the character!

Have you ever been able to watch the tv show?? Made during the 60s or 70s I think...anyhow, it was a great show that used the Corsair and had some action sequences.

Ahh man, that was before my time. But the real question is how did I survive being a history major without hearing any reference to it?! Do you think its on dvd?

It used to play regularly during the 80s and 90s here in the US on the re-run type channels. Should be on DVD....somewhere. If not, then it may soon.
