how do people get those custom titles above their avatar?

Generally they come about as being an active member of the forum...typically one that has said something that caught the Title Fairy's attention. Don't waste time asking for one...that just guarantees you won't get it.

If you want to see some fun titles, just go to "Member list", then to "posts" to see the top posters and their avatars and titles. For about 10 pages, you'll see a lot of different titles. Very fun.

HEY WAIT A MINUTE! What's that guy doing with a title on PAGE 48? 512 posts at 2.11 per day and he gets a title? I feel slighted. First the wife, now this. ;)

If I continue on to later pages and fewer posts, I DO see others with custom titles. The only downside is "User is banned from forums" is not a title I'd want. "User is banned to the doghouse" is the one my wife gives me and I don't like it either. :p
