I too suggest going through the manual and trying some pictures on items in your house as long as it is raining outside. Play w/ the different settings and see the results. Learn about the histogram. There's a decent learning curve to get over.

start by swithching from ""wainting for the shot"" to ""looking for the shot""
the rain shoudn't stop you form snaping ....
get the drops as mentionned or whatever, there are unlimited subjcts to shoot, it's the perspective of looking at them we should learn.
