How do I use photoshop to produce nice and even skin tones such as in this picture?

I'm not sure that the photographer and artist of that photo would enjoy seeing you showing his photo like that. Maybe if you linked it instead...

And those don't look much like nice and even skin tones, more like a barbie doll fake virtual skin tones. Just my opinion.

#1, start off with a model with good skin.
#2, use a photoshop plugin called portrature.
#3, use the smudge, blur technique (which I personally don't like)

By "even skin tones" do you mean smoothness of texture, or consistency of colour?

I personally do not feel that the portraiture plugin that people have started using does that great a job at all, and if you're going to use it you need to be prepared to do some masking so it doesn't blur out detail in the hair.

I just prefer to do it manually in photoshop, you end up having just a lot more control over it.

And to think, we used to do this stuff with the lights and filters.
