Look at this lens hood for the EF 400 f/2.8 L IS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=186975&is=REG) . It looks like it's just a simple, plastic lens hood, just like the ones I have for my lenses (I don't have an EF 400 f/2.8!). Maybe it's just a bit larger or so.

How is it possible that a piece of plastic costs $ 533.50 ??? What's so special about that lens hood?

I'm afraid it isn't, some of the other hoods are also very expensive, like this one for the EF 500 f/4.0 L IS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=186095&is=REG) : $ 494.95. There are a few other ones that cost between $ 360 and $ 460, but those are white and made of metal (?). At least they look more expensive than those two very expensive, black plastic ones.... :?

That's INSANE! Maybe we should contact Canon's customer care, and ask them "WTF"?
And to think, I thought $45 for the lens hood for my 70-200 2.8 lens was high.

ive just been looking around and can't actually find one in the UK - according to one site the hood comes free with the lens.
I guess that Canon think someone who will spend around £5,500 on a lens and loses their hood wont mind paying a measly £300 approx for a replacement.

...you must be rich. I'm not even going to look what an EF 500 f/4.0 or EF 400 f/2.8 lens costs.... but I guess that if you can buy those, $ 500 for a lens hood should also not be a problem....

The 400mm f/2.8 is selling for £5,499 at my favourite lens supplier... the 500m f/4 is a quite reasonable £4,699.

This is probably not plastic.......

Probably some exotic aluminum alloy titanium metal that needs to be heated in a certain amount of heat and molded in a matter of seconds before it dries..............

hence the steep price.

............so if you look at the labor that goes into this - its actually a bargain!!!

YEAH RIGHT!!!

It's not just a hood - it's an L hood. The flare it blocks is sharper, with less CA and better color than standard plastic hoods.

yeah...an L hood. I dont see a red stripe though. You'd think Canon would have the good taste to paint a red stripe on it for those prices...

Check out the real source at
http://www.usa.canon.com/html/eflenses/accessories/index.html#hoods

Doesn't address the original issue of cost but these large hoods are way more than just plastic - they are white to match and have a locking screw as well, that's what adds to the cost, since it's made of unobtainium

Now I know why I saw a pro shooter recently with a big lens and duct tape on the lens hood. He probably cracked the hood. I guess pro shooters have their limits too.

WOW

You guys DO have some common sense after all. It's obvious that canon makes 100x on every piece of gear it sells.

50 mm PLASTIC PRIME for 300 bucks? Multi coat my @#$$%$@#! Mass produced it costs from 4 to 8 bucks MAXIMUM.

It's not about how much it costs to make. It's about the demand for it and how much people are willing to pay.

It costs about 2 grand to build a car, and there's much more multi coatings and know hows there than in the lenses.

for about $2 i can get some cool white posterboard that would look nice wrapped around the lens as a hood. just a little trimming and i would have just save about $530

not too shabby. :)

It's all a matter of scale. If someone has just spent £5k+ on a lens then £400 for a lens hood is nothing.
The lens hoods are not plastic, they all metal with felt lining and a locking screw on top to secure it.

All L lenses come with lens hoods and cases anyway and in most cases replacement parts always cost more than they should.

And I thought I was being 'done' being asked $200 for a 72mm PL filter!! When (I did say WHEN...5 weeks now) my MkII arrives I shall now go and get one.
Who'd think we'd ever see the day. I can remember when you bought a new camera or lens you'd get a FREE UV or Skylight filter with it. Times change. [F.R.] :? :?

The lens hoods for all the current big primes are white painted Carbon Fibre. Some people seem to be under the impression you have to buy this in addition to your lens, when in fact they all come with the hood, a leather 'lens cap' and a hard carry case.

I think the B&H picture is wrong (not the first time), and it should be the whire CF model.

Thanks for putting that straight. It'd be some kinda *&^% to have to buy this extra. I can understand the cost a lot better now that I know that if you buy it separately it costs. I'm sure there's not much profit or volume in just making lens hoods for these few buyers. At least they include it in the original kit.

Still, if I lost mine, I think I'd still end up at Home Depot or in my garage rummaging around.

LOL, and I thought $30 was too expensive for a lens hood!!!

I think they are so much money because they block out exactly the amount of glare and stray light according to the specific focal length you are using -- in other words it is not a "one size fits all" type of hood.

What exactly is the point of the felt inside of the lens hood?

What exactly is the point of the felt inside of the lens hood?

The Black felt inside the lens hood helps absorb stray light by making the inside of the hood non-reflective.

Lens hood, just a piece of plastic, for.... $ 533.50 ?!?!

Whenever I think I've seen it all, something else comes along! I agree with CDS. Find a high school with a machine shop & they'll probably make one for you for $20 for materials.

What exactly is the point of the felt inside of the lens hood?
It's to absorb light which might bounce into the lens elements.

I hope you had fingers in cheek when you typed that. :D There is no excuse for a $500 plastic tube. Canon should be ashamed. As far as anyone who would buy one... Well,... I can't think of anything to say about that. :?

Talk about multipurpose.

You could probably buy the machinery and material to make 20 hoods yourself with that money............. Someone should send Canon some hate mail for this.
