I am missing a lot of good sunset shots :( because I can not get the appropriate setting for my camera. I end up with blurry skies. Yes, I do use a tripod so I am not causing the blur by camera motion as I take the shot. Can anybody suggest a setting I could try in order to get a nice, clear evening sky? 8)
I can email a shot I have taken should you want to look at one of my sunset pictures and use that to offer suggestions.
Thank you :)

Here are two sunsets I made with a G5.
I don't know what you mean by "blurry", but if AF is not giving you proper focus, you will have to use manual focus at infinity.
The first image is AV 1/640s f4 28.8mm at infinity
The second, AV 1/500s f4 28.8mm at infinity

I do not know how to post an image here for you to look at, but thank you very much for taking the time to try to address my question. :D
Now, to set at infinity, can you just give me a short and sweet way to do that? I am not good with manuals at all :( , although I am trying hard to be as independent as I can. There are various learning styles and I am what they call tactile :?
John_T......THANK YOU (I am hoping you are a patient man)

Thanks Juanita, I've got jillions of sunsets, sunrises and seascapes. one of these days I'll get them organized.
Andy! Howya doin'? Thanks for the compliment.
Juanita, when you try to focus on the sky, horizon or the water, the auto focus can't find something distinct enough to focus on, so you get the yellow/orange square which means, mostly, no focus. Sometimes you will get the green square, but the focus is not on what you want it to be.
To manually set the focus where you wnt it to be, push the MF (Manual Focus) button. To the right of the LCD screen you will see a vertical bar with numbers to the right. If you then spin the wheel in front of the shutter button, you will see the white portion of the bar go up and down. The numbers are distances and the oo at the top is infinity, meaning infinitely in the distance. This is the distance setting you want for for sunsets or anything way out there.
You can also use MF for focusing on nearer subjects, and the magnified square in the middle is supposed to help you, but you really have to play with it to get it right. Infinity is infinity, so there you can't go too wrong.
Hope this helps, but don't hesitate to keep on nagging us until you get it write.
Just for fun...

Juanita,
If you have some webspace with your local internet provider you can
post pictures there and put up a link to them here using the following
code:

If you need help uploading pics to your webspace send me a PM, or
go to the Canadian Photo Club website, sign up and upload some pics
there...it is probably easier this way.

John, awesome shots. Two questions:
- what kind of processing did you do to get the colors on those shots, especially the last one. The color is just amazing. And did you do anything for noise? (OK, that's going to make it three questions.)
- Where do you find these ocean sunsets in Switzerland?

Darn, you beat me to the question! Mind you, Switzerland has some large lakes (Lake Geneva, Lago Majore), ... but no surf!

I normally just take my sunset shots with the landscape on the dial and with the "Vivid" effect on, this normally gives me a nice clean outcome. I need to experiment with the manual modes more.
Here is a shot i took with the landscape option and vivid on...
