Yes I know about other posts, but I will give you an example from another industry.
HK had a prototype of a new firearm out for testing and for show and tell about 1 year prior to actual first sale date. It would stand to reason that if something is being sold in 2008, that some of them exist for testing and show and tell.

Lead and R&D times vary greatly between different industries.
I work in an industry where we could develop, source parts suppliers, and put into mass production a new product in about 20 working days.
Airbus on the other hand have taken several years for the new A380 to become a reality.

So are you saying you don't think canon has any preproduction units laying around? Or that we should expect a 2 year delay on a camera like with the airbus? Will Nikon be the next Boeing to sneak in, get airbus orders then have a delay as well? :)

I'm saying we have no idea what Canons lead times are, and what they are likely to have laying around.
They might have complete units, or they might be test bench bound mules.
We simply have no idea, and unless we were working for Canon, really couldn't have any idea.

I doubt it. That said, I'd be extremely surprised if Canon doesn't have working prototypes of the replacement 5D unit, whatever it might be called.

Actually, I don't doubt there have been prototypes sitting around for a long time - it's just that they may differ very substantially from the finished product that makes it to market. It's a matter of which proto they show to the public.. and how close it is to what we'll actually be able to buy.

A few pre-production units laying around? Where someone could sneak them out?

Preproduction models seldom are fully workable and the "sneaker" would likely lose more than his balls.

There's an old expression that might apply here, "when baby ready, he come".

Until then, we're just spectulating on air, and that's why this thread belongs in the Rumours section.

Friend of mine is in that industry as a lead designer for one of Airbus sub contractors.

I think that is because some Bozo decided to switch the wiring material between copper and aluminum (with the resulting, not considered, bend radius issues). Thus all the wiring harnesses were way short.

Heads rolled for this one.
