I'm considering doubling my range with the sigma 2x extender. This would give me... (70-200)*2*1.6 range

That's one cool toy. And I was considering a tele extention for my S1 which is more expensive

What's the quality like? Anybody uses it here? Gimme your IMO

I used to have a Sigma 2x extender when I had a Sigma 70-200 2.8...I had no complaints. It was some sort of a metal or composite material...it felt very solid and well built. It's not compatible with all lenses, but it will work well with your 2.8 EX. With the 2x converter, you lose 2 stops of light; with the 1.4x extender, 1 stop.

Dam. I was hoping it would be 1 stop for both... Doesn't really matter I guess. I shoot at f/8 outside anyways.

2 stops of light loss from 2x won't be too bad if you shoot a lot of outdoor (bright) work. Maybe use a monopod or something because at that range, the slightest shake is accentuated.
Sometimes, I will use the 2x extender to get a good detailed shot of the moon's surface...the moon is actually pretty bright and, contrary to what I thought, needed a very fast shutter time.

No kidding! I am shooting at 200 mm end with my rebel and I can notice it getting blurry with anything less than 1/80 seconds.

I'll try and use a tripod with cable release whenever possible. :?

I use the 2x tcon on my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 as well. The only complaint I have is when I extended to 200mm (400mm) on my 10D, my pictures aren't sharp. And yes, I do use a monopod.

Instead of being at 200mm (400mm), I'll go to 190mm (380mm) and everything works fine. I believe somewhere in this forum others have had the same problem I have. But mostly now I know what to do, it's not a problem.

You will lose image quality, that is a given, but I had also asked in an earlier thread (that got no responses) about chromatic aberrations. I read somewhere that it was apparent when using tele-converters. I have a Tamron 2x.

Sorry, can't help you there.

I get horrible chromatic abberations without a tele converter. I can only imagine what it's gonna be like with it  L is the cure, but I'm too cheap for that.

I got a nice photo of my subject smiling with a healthy purple glow around him. Happy happy happy
