OK, here's what I intend to do.

Tonight I'm going to scout out this place in the German countryside in the hills. Lots of fields around with huge bales of hay, etc. I want to be there tomorrow morning at o-dark thirty, already set up when the sun rises over the mountain. I know there's a way to take several exposures, then layer two of them -- one with the sky and rising sun properly exposed, and then one with the fields (lower portion of pic) close to properly exposed.

Is there an online tutorial somewhere that shows how to do this? I find a lot of talk about layers assumes a good bit about procedures in Photoshop, and I make it around OK in there, but I need pretty much step-by-step in order to "get it" on this.

Any help appreciated!!!

Any help appreciated.

For me, an easier way to do it is to use a graduated neutral density filter to mask the bright half of the scene before it ever gets into the camera. This works well if you have a flat horizon, but if you have lots of obstacles on the horizon, then the Photoshop methods work better.

If you want to try this with blends in Photoshop, this is a pretty concise tutorial that I've used with some success...

I'll try the blending and see what happens. Haven't had the time to purchase a split neut dens filter.
