1D on its way from EBay..What now

After much agonizing, I have put in a winning bid for US spec 1D on EBay. Of course, now buyers remorse is pulsing through every fibre of my being. I know as soonb as my credit card clears, Canon will announce a 1D+ that have more megapixels, is cheapers and will respect me in the morning.
It appears that I will have to purchase a memory card of some sort. Is the 1gig IBM microdrive the way to go? Anything else that I should purchase while waiting for the FedEx guy?

Congratulations on your purchase. I'm sure that you'll enjoy it.

Either buy a 1GB Microdrive or some of those Ridata CF Cards from Power in Numbers (I don't have the link handy, but I'm sure someone else will post it). They're the best bang for the buck, I think. They have fast 512MB CF cards for a great price.

I have a 1GB Microdrive and haven't had any problems yet. Lots of people post problems, but then again lots of people don't.

Since it isn't solid state, it is more prone to problems with vibration and things like that. But I find they work great and would recommend them.

You'll find that you'll either need a bunch of CF cards or a digital wallet. Soon you'll be shotting 21 frame 8 fps bursts of everything -- and the space goes away fast.

I would suggest that you hold off on purchasing any type of bag until you have the unit in your hands. You'll find that the body is too tall to fit in many bags with a lens attached. It helps to bring it with you and fiddle to make sure that the body fits how you want it to fit. I went through the entire stock at a local shop and only found two that I thought it fit in acceptably (with a 70-200mm attached and a bag that wasn't "ugly huge").

Try not to get too much drool on the window while you're looking out for the FedEx driver.... :D

Hi JR92-

I have a Lowepro MicroTrekker 200. I bought it out of despiration, not for any particular love for the bag. But it's actually turned out to be quite nice. (Though I saw a few in some shutterbug ads that look NICE -- I'll try and find them and post information. They loaded different, and appealed to me more)

It works out well. I can carry my 1D with 70-200 f/2.8 L attached, a 28-70 f/2.8 L, the lens hood that fits those both, a 50 f/1.4, a flash unit that's about the same size as the Canon 550ex (soon to be replaced with a 550ex), the dummy battery and ac adaptor, a few CF cards and PCMCIA adaptors, some filters, paperwork, table tripod, etc.

The best part... it's really not all that big for everything I can fit in it. Granted, it weighs quite a bit fully loaded, but it's not big. It's about 13" tall, 5" deep, and 11" wide fully loaded.

Just snapped this. Despite my best try, I couldn't figure out how to take the photo with all the gear in the bag. :)

Sorry for the bad photo -- Photoshop "LOW Jpeg Web Optimized" at it's worst. It looks squished in the photo because of how I have it leaning, but trust me it fills up nicely and is quite sharp.

I set the dividers at the top so that they form around the shape of the 1D. The flash goes in the photo's bottom right, the 50mm f/1.4 top right. I put flash cards and body caps in the middle right. The AC adaptor and filters go on the front of the bag. The table tripod fits into the small pocket on the front flap.

I took one of the extra little dividers and put it perpendicular under the 70-200 to help hold it a bit.

P.S. - I paid $60-70 ($110 Canadian) for it. The Domke Spider 10 Backpack and the BUG Bag 20 are the ones that I would really love to get my hands on. They look very nice, but at $120 I would want to see it before I bought it. I haven't found any locally yet, though....

WE have one of those bags. We used it last year to haul the IIE and 7E and, a minitripod and 5 lenses (EF 28 to 100-400 IS) on vacation. It worked well. I might have to kick out some superflous stuff to accomodate the extra body.

Well you are correct. The new 1D is called 1DN and is at 10mp. Is not in production yet only prototype is around.

Anyway thats all I know right now.
