View Full Version : Grouse ID - Spruce grouse?

I'm not sure why this is bothering me so much, I guess I was just stunned by this bird. I found two of them in Yellowstone with my brother. We found the first after it began to make a very low growling noise. Similar to a dog's growl, but much deeper and louder. Anyway, one guy thinks it's a spruce grouse, and I must say it does look like one, however I can't find anything about a spruce grouse standing on a log and making such a low sound.

I think all Grouse have some kind of sound they make to mark territory, including flapping and beating their wings. But, I don't know in particular what this bird is. It's a nice catch though a little small. :)

Onwuma, you've got a male blue grouse there. The sounds are just part of the mating ritual and as Mitch said are common to all grouse I know of, though some make sounds differently than others.
