Could someone please tell me the difference? I need to buy a replacement as my 511 is about 2 years old but I have used it extensively. It doesn't hold a charge as long as it did when new.

The BP 512 doesn't have a groove down the middle and will not fit in the BGED3. The BP511 has a center groove and will fit in all BP511 or BP512 applications. Buy a well known generic like a Lenmar or Power 2000. It should resemble the BP511.

The BP-512 is also a stronger battery than the 511.

That isn't an issue for generics as it is the same generic for the 511 and 512. They all have the groove and can be compared by their power rating.

Thanks for the fast response, you two. I acutally am planning to use it in my G3. I realize this is an EOS board but I did not find a related topic in the G3 boards. Is it your opinion that the generic ones are just as good? I will probably buy on eBay.

I think your best bet is to buy brand name generics (Lenmar, Power 2000, etc) from a reliable source.

I just got 2 at $11.99 each plus $6.99 shipping from www.sterlingtek.com

Placed the order on that website Mon nite (Aug 2), they shipped it out the next day and I got it in my mailbox Fri (Aug 6). Charged 'em both up right after receipt and shot most of the day with one of them yesterday.

I'm happy.

I have 3 generic that I bought off eBay to along with my Canon that came with my 10D. All of them work flawlessly with my BGED3. So, I never had a problem and I couldn't tell you what kind they are.

Not the absence of the groove down centre on 512 that 511 has.

No that is a myth. The BP-511 are EXACTLY the same in every way except one... the ridge on the back.
Both the BP-511 and BP-512 are 1100mah.
The BP-511A is stronger.
