A few months ago I bought a great little Canon SD850is to take on vacation. I had been using an older Sony CyberShot and pretty much just took "snapshot" type pictures at parties, my Rotary Club meetings, etc. When I saw how a little control over the settings can make a difference in the results (see my attachment), I opted to upgrade to a DSLR, my Rebel XTi. I have only had it for a month and am anxious to see what total control over the settings can do.
Let me know what you think of this point & shoot effort from a moving fishing boat on Shem Creek. I hope to improve with my upgraded camera.
This forum is a great place to learn! I am looking forward to posting more and finding out how to do more artistic shots!

Looks like a very nice scene there. Would it be possible to crop some off the bottom of the image? Specifically the water coming off the boat and the bright thing angled down in the lower right corner? Those two things kind of take away the calm, peaceful feel of this image.

You were there - would you say that the blue cast in the image is close to the true color of the scene?

With respect to composition, it is usually frowned upon to shoot the image so as to make is symmetrical around the horizon - dividing the picture exactly in halves.

The extreme white thing in the lower right corner is very distracting.

^---- The symmetry is yet another reason why cropping out the bottom part with the boat and waves in it would improve upon the shot.

This is right off the camera. I haven't cropped or enhanced the photo. I will probably clone some water to cover the distraction in the corner. This was a very early, foggy morning. The photo is a tad bluer than the gray mist. But like I said, this little bit of control that my point & shoot gave me got me excited about doing better. Thanks for the comments. I'm learning a lot from experience shared by guys like you.

This is what we did not want you to do. Crop that stuff out instead of cloning the water. It will improve the balance of your shot.
