Hi there,

I will be boarding on a cruise ship in about two weeks. I will be bringing my Canon 40D and Canon 24-70L F2.8 L Lens.

I would like to take as much good pictures with my camera as I can. What is a good book or website I can read to teach myself how to take better pictures. I want to improve on my composition and making the image more interesting. Is there a guide on travel photography where it teaches you how to shoot around town?

For a quick start, non-technical book, try Scott Kelby's "The Digital Photography Book". Easy read, good tips for lots of occasions.

Also check around the forums, most popular threads and see why that is. It's not always just good photoshopping, just simple good composition is the key to a great photo. Rules of thirds - and the times you break it, as it's not really a rule, but just a suggestion ;)

do a web search on the destinations of the place you are visiting and see how others have taken... learn what makes their photos work or not work.

I second that Scott Kelbys book is great. Its easy reading will get you shooting great pictures with out all the technical stuff (that can and should come later)

Congratulation on the cruise, the 40D, and the 24-70 L. Your off to a great start. You can read books if you like, but I think the most important thing to do is not panic. I've blown more shots by stressing myself out than I can remember.

Here are my suggestions for you:

1. Include your surrounding in your photos. Your spending alot of money to go on a cruise, so make sure you include your surrounding in your photos. Remember, you've got 10 megapixels, so you can crop when you get home...don't crop in the viewfinder.

2. Try placing your subject (friend or family member) at the far right or left of the photo. This can be alot more interesting than having your subject directly in the center.

3. If you unsure about exposure, bracket.

And of course, enjoy your trip. A few photos are fine, make sure to enjoy yourself. Let us know how it goes.
