View Full Version : Which DRebel modes support RAW?

I don't have my manual around, and was wondering which modes supported the RAW format. Now that I'm running PS CS I want to shoot more RAW, but during some shooting today, I bounced between Av and Portrait and noticed that half of my pictures went back to JPG.

Thanks for the help!

Also, with my 420ex on the camera and turned on, the RAW images were all pretty blurred, while the JPG images were perfectly crisp (28-75 2.8) I didn't look at EXIF yet, but it looks like the flash didn't fire while in RAW mode for some reason. Any ideas?

I believe only the creative modes (Av, Tv, M, etc.) support RAW files.

Raw is available in all the "creative" modes, as defined in the manual. as for the blurring, if you were shooting portrait mode the camera is picking the settings for you. if your shooting AV your shutter speed may not have been fast enough. it's also possible your subject may have moved. you may also be able to fix the "blur" in post prossesing, if it was not a focus problem.

On the EOS camera dials, it's the modes that do not have any pictures next to them and the green box...those area all the "preset" Canon modes and auto default to jpg...easy way to remember it.

BTW...I don't know about the MkII or the 1Ds or 1D (cause I've only used creative modes on those), but this holds true for D30, D60, and 10D....it's not just the 300D.

Thanks guys. As per Eric1's post, I was at f4 on a 2.8 lens and using an accessory 420ex flash. It was indoors and just dim enough to need the flash, or else I would have had the blurring. When shooting in the 'creative' modes at F2.8 the pictures were crystal clear, but they were quite a bit more blurry on portrait mode at f4, even though I had the flash on. Maybe I just didn't hit the 'flash' button. Is there an indicator on the display or any way to know that the accessory flash is going to 'flash' with the next shutter release? Maybe I'm missing that...

Thanks,
Adam

I just set the WB to the flash icon and push the flash button on the side for the pop-up if I need that. I have had the same thing with my 420EX

These kinds of questions drive me nuts. RTFM would be my pat answer but I will restrain myself.

Dreb if you read my post it said that I didn't have immediate access to the manual but needed help. If you don't like these kinds of questions ignore them. My post subject was clear as to my question, and it is also clearly, in your estimation, a RTFM question, so why did you bother responding?

Thanks to others who responded. It looks like while in creative modes the camera does not automatically enable the flash, but while in portrait mode it turns the flash on for every shot automatically. This would explain why after I changed from Portrait to Av I no longer had flash and the pictures were blurred. Learn something new every day... with or without the f'n manual.

Something I discovered when I began shooting RAW is that when the camera was set to Parameter 1 or 2 all my RAW shots came out blurry, I then changed the camera to Adobe RGB and my RAW shots weren't blurry anymore.

Interesting... I am on Parameter 2. I wonder if I should switch to AdobeRGB. Although I did notice that once I started shooting RAW in creative mode after hitting the flash button, everything came out perfectly crisp. I was just thrown off by switching from portrait, where it defaulted with the flash on, to creative where it was not.

Hey SENSter I notice you have the Canon 28-105 and the Tamron. I really enjoy my Tamron 28-75, but I was wondering how often you used the lens vs. the Canon. I also have the Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro I use for anything beyond the 28-75 range... .and I'm saving for the 100-400L to finish it off.

Just curious about your usage of the canon zoom vs. the Tamron...

redbutt Thanks for the easy memory trick. However, with the green box I don't get RAW among the listings????

Eric1 Should RAW be appearing in the green box mode? I am on page 48 of manual.

 While I have just obtained this expensive digital camera (Not much savings left!), I am totally new to photography and am hoping I can still participate in this forum. I was happy to find my question already raised but uncomfortable with reaction of DReb-MO. If there is a section that is more for beginners, I'll be the first to go there.

Adam, in Av mode the camera will expose the shot as if there were no flash. the flash will still fire though as fill flash. In a dim room at f/4, I imagine the shutter speed will be rather slow (maybe 1/15 or less). Even if the flash fires, the shots will still be blurry due to the slow shutter speed. On the other hand, if you were to use P mode then the flash will automatically be taken into account and you'll get settings like f/4 @ 1/60, for example.

kcamera, no RAW when using the green box. Switch it to P if you'd like to have a go at shooting RAW. It's very similar to the green box so it's easy to use too.

On a Digital Rebel, you won't get RAW available in green box mode. On other models, such as a D60, you will.

That is why, in these discussions, you have to keep reminding us of your particular model of Canon. Some people with answers will be thinking only of their model, which might be a different answer from your Digital Rebel.

Dreb if you read my post it said that I didn't have immediate access to the manual but needed help.

Well, Adam, that's not really true! If you have access to the forum, then you have access to the manual:

RAW: Digital Rebel EOS 300D

 Confirmed: green box does NOT offer RAW

P = easy to use and offers RAW.

Thanks everyone!
