Accoding to this site:

it should be a decent lens.

But that's only one opinion....

Best regards,
Andy

Thanks Andy! It ranks above the Canon for sharpness, amazing.

I bought this lens about 2 years ago on the strength of the review in the UK weekly Amateur Photography magazine. It got 92% overall (a very good score in AP) with excellent comments in all areas, particularly sharpness at all focal lengths. The test chart for this lens that the mag printed showed it was better at all focal lengths than all similar Canon zoom lenses (I have their lens test reprint book with all lenses from last 10 years and I thoroughly compared the competition, including the smaller zooms such as 28-80, 28-105 etc). I'm still very happy with the lens, having used it on a film camera (50E) and now a D60 for over 6000 pics. Superb zoom range means I can capture pretty much everything I want without switching lenses.

I anticipated this! Bought the lens 2nd hand yesterday from Jessops.
£160 complete with Hoya Skylight filter and lens hood.

Waiting for some decent weather....

That's a good price considering its £400 RRP and street price about double what you paid. Good choice for a much underrated lens. Too many people think that only Canon does quality and most people look down at you when you say you use a Tamron. Last time I looked there wasn't a better quality non-L zoom lens covering even part of this lens' range.

I did have the Canon 28-135mm IS last year, picked it up for a
pittance...then sold it on at a handsome profit.

I'm hoping the Tamron performs just as well, I don't need IS for
my type of photography.....

Seems yummi. I am starting to look for a compact zoom that covers that range. I can't carry 70-200 with the kit lens all the time.

Is the body plastic or metal?

The mount is metal but the shell is plastic. What lenses are made of metal on the bits you handle?

Threads like this should be banned :!:

I have just bought the Canon 28-135 IS at a good price (for the UK) and am enjoying the wide zoom range and, for me, very acceptable quality.

Then you come along and suggest I'm a mug cos this Tamron lens at half the price is better

You should think on the effect this type of comment has on the sleep patterns of us chaps who have just made the wrong decision (maybe) again

Sleep easy Bill...the Canon is a first class lens...

I use a Canon 80-200mm f2.8 L for most of my work, the Tamron
will give me a walk-about lens for my forthcoming holiday to Oz..
