i see these batteries on ebay selling for like $5 for 2. how good are these compared to the official canon batteries that sell for $50?

I'd suggest trying a happy middle postition here.. the name brand batts are still much less expensive than the Canon (Lenmar, Maha, Powerex) and yet offer a longer charge and equal or superior reliability.
The E-bay batts on the other hand are a gamble.. sometimes they work,. sometimes they don't.

Hi I agree with CDS - don't buy the cheaper batteries. Not only may they not work, but I would worry about the (lack of) overheating protection. There are more and more incidents of batteries exploding (mainly in mobile phones) being reported. These seem to be cheaper replacement batteries without overheating protection.
I purchased 2 repacement batteries at around $20 each on Ebay and they work just fine.
There has been much discussion about replacement batteries on this forum - it might pay to do a search on this topic if you haven't already done so.
Cheers

i got 2 bp-511's for 34 including shipping from http://bluenook.com and they are not the 1100-1200 mAh they are 1500 mAh. I've had no issues with them and I just had to charge them after 2 weeks of use after taking about 500-600 pix.

Here is a thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=32725&highlight=cheap+batteries) that discusses cheaper than name brand batteries.
There is a place that is recommended there that sells 511 equivalent batteries for something like $11. If you can get batteries that members recommend for $11 you really can't beat that with a stick. Or a monopod.
