Mike, by chance did you use this before? ;)
I think I know what it is, but have been wrong at least once before. :p
You could be right Jim. I have this massive folder of macros and I used to note down when I used one for SMGG ..... but I've lost the piece of paper! :( If I did, it was so long ago that only us 'old timers' would remember it! ;)

Looks like one of those old 1970's "door knob covers", but that seems just too obscure!

Nope that's how I wanted to crop it.

is it soldering tin with residual resin?

Hit the nail on the head. I was looking for "soldering iron" or "the tip of a soldering iron" but I think that's close enough.

The brown is the rosin-flux of my rosin-core solder... the silver is the solder itself:

You're just as equipped as me... I use kit lens and my 20D + vivitar 283 (not necessary). I pop the lens on the camera, select the aperture i want, hold the DOF preview button and unmount the lens while stopped down... then I position my subject, and hold the lens in front of the camera reversed. Doesn't allow for zooming/focus change (I leave focus at infinity) but it allows for great macro shots with nothing other than camera and cheap lens.

Interesting technique. I tried at first using my 28-135mm lens no luck at 72mm glass is way to large. So I tried my kit lens and with some playing was able to capture a couple images that look ok as a thumbnail but we poor at 100% crop. Does not help I'm trying hand held in low light with a 1-1/2 shutter speed, but I do see hope if I use plenty of light maybe a tripod and lots of trial and error. Thanks for the tip, will probably buy a reverse mount hub for $7 and see how that works also.
