It appears to be some kind of spring loaded latch and release system. metal part is lifter out of notches and can then slide freely.

Yes, the notches are for postioning.....something....

you're getting warm so here's a clue - The item is photography related

tomjd

Anybody have any idea if anyone makes film for these anymore?

lavanut

Since you got that it was some sort of sea shell on the first guess :(, I'm looking for a little more clarification on what kind. It's an easily recognizable one when you see the whole thing.

Michael, you got so close! Even if sea shell hadn't been the first guess, I was still looking for what kind. A sand dollar is a pretty identifiable kind of shell. I thought this would last longer than it did though. Guess I need to get some tougher shots!

No part of a camera strap

Oh, and might I add.... I saw how those are made on the show, "How It's Made" and wow... it is quite the process and so neat to watch them cut the designs after layering the wax. The artists go to school for about 2 years or so and then it takes even a big longer to get really proficient with that type of work. it's beautiful though.
