Have i got the right idea?

I read an article on landscape photography and the difference between a "travel" shot and a photographic shot.

It said to include a bit of foreground. So i decided to put in a bit of the beaches running track. This is my home St Heliers.

Been here my whole life. I found a good vantage point on a hill.

Have i got the right idea by including the running track to make a "photographic shot" instead of a typical landscape shot.

Yep you're starting to get the idea. Don't worry if it all seems a bit overwhelming, I've been in and around photography for many many years and I'm still learning.

Good shots composition wise, but look at the difference in contrast and colour between the first one and shots two and three. Those ones really pop - the colours are vibrant, the contrast rich.

I like how you've got a runner in the first one, would look a bit static without something to break up the grey of the walkway.

I had quick play in picasa before and threw a grad filter over the sky to deepen it a bit, and warmed up the image a tad. It then went from the snapshot type exposure to the "ooh that's not bad" of the second ones. If you haven't got picasa I'd recommend you do. It's a great way of making quick non destructive changes to images.

Nice pics Matt -- you are getting the hang of it. I gather you didn't use a CP but managed to get real good coloured skies for 2&3 - good job.

In your 2nd pic I would have probably moved forward or to the left to include the water in the foreground...

Very nice photos, but I think the road in number one blocks the viewer from entering the scene and is not so esthetically pleasing. It might have been better with him running on the beach instead.

That last comment is good. I was looking at the picture & thinking it is good... But. I think that explains the But.

My next plan is to find a river or a small stream and do some slow shutter speed shots and get some water flow effect. Will keep this foreground idea in my mind from now on.

This is where the ND filters you have yet to buy will come in handy ;)

Depends on how many stops you want to drop. If you get the slide in types, you can buy more than one and stack them. Someone that uses them frequently want to step in here?
