great minds think alike - obviously because we are both in the west mids - i did exactly the same last night but have not uploaded them from my camera yet - hope they turn out as good as yours. what lense did you use?

Thanks Andy. Yes it was nice and clear so after being out most of the day with the cameras I thought the moon was next.
I used 400mm with a 2x tele and a 1.4 x tele on, used mirror lockup to cut out the vibrations. I'm pleased with them.

Yeah, I'm right outside of Chicago, and used my 70-300 IS USM, and had just bought a tripod and remote.

Think we should get people from all over the world to post a pic of the moon so we can see how it differs.

Great shot 2005GLI. Nice detail.

I also took a moon shot at the weekend, from Surrey at about 19:30 Saturday evening.

It's here [flickr] (http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1659874832&size=o) (Sorry for the external link, but the image file is too big for uploading to P.O.T.N. at the moment). It's a 100% crop and has undergone a little sharpening in Photoshop.

It was taken with my 400D and 70-300 IS, in P mode at ISO 100. I had to set Exposure Compensation to -2 and use Partial metering to reduce overexposure, but compared with Skylab's shots mine still seems overexposed. I used mirror-lockup and an IR remote.

Any pointers on how I could improve the exposure?

jemann. Just had a look at your shot. I shoot full manual mode. F11 1/30th sec. iso 100.
I don't think auto modes are that good for such a shot. Try manual and take a shot, look at it then a
adjust shutter speed till you get a good one.

Great shot 2005GLI. Nice detail.

Thanks when I uploaded it to PS7 i kept saying to myself the shot sucks. Was very close to deleting it. I had taken a shot of the moon also around 430pm, it was just over the NYC skyline. But it wasn't bright enough to get any good detail, that and I think Canon did a poor job of dust removal on the sensor as it was very noticeable in the blue skies.

Hey Brian.

I took your advice and tried another shot tonight in manual mode, at ISO 100, f/13 and shutter at 1/30. Exposure seems a lot better, but it also seems a little less sharp.

The result is here [flickr] (http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1714301566&size=o).

Jason

Edit: Just realised I forgot to disable IS while tripod mounted. Might account for the lack of sharpness.

Just had a look. Not to bad, seems sharp to me. Yes the IS will mess up on a tripod. Took one tonight will post in a bit.

Well, ok, it's not THAT white, but 100% cloud cover makes my nightly moon shot impossible.

That's okay... Friday is full moon!

Never mind. A full moon is not the best one to take photos of. It's to "FLAT"
you don't get shadows in the craters. A crescent and quarter moon are the best, half and three quarter are good.

i never have problems using IS on my tripod when i take pics of the moon. using live view (if you have it) and 100-400 set to 400, you will notice that even the slightest of wind will shake the image...
i took a couple of pics last night too..but not edited them. i'm after a half moon shot so i get the shadows. so far, most of my shots are of the full moon.

It depends on the IS, the newer system will not work with tripods you have to switch it of. Yes half or quarter moon shots are best, good luck and look forward to seeing them.

Here we have 2 quick shots of the moon from tonight.
Wouldn't F8 and 1/60 be better than F11 and 1/30?
I think there is a bit of motion blur on your moon...

Except from that they are huge, you really have some potential with the lens you used :)

Here's[flickr] (http://www.flickr.com/photos/14608231@N06/1805692771/) another moon shot I took last night, with a catadioptric lens borrowed from a colleague.

The lack of sharpness is disappointing, but I guess I can't expect too much from a mirror lens.

The 1024 x 1024 version is a 1:1 crop of the original.

i was waiting for the moon to show over the houses here in NNJ around 11pm and nothing. I know when it first rises my god is it an erie orange glow, but looks so much larger too. But its also windy so most shots would be bad anyway.

I saw we still petition for a sticky moon thread!!!!!

Yes we still want a moon sticky.!!!!!!
Yes the moon does tend to look larger when close to the horizon, strange.

Regardless of the moon's elevation, the distance between an observer (at the center of the horizontal line) and the moon remains constant (unfilled circles). However, a moon perceived as growing closer as its elevation increases (filled circles), must appear to grow smaller. Credit: PNAS, Jan. 4, 2000 issue.

interesting read there. i always thought it was cool to see the moon "so close" sometimes as it rose, but then go smaller as i drove closer to it.

and tonight would be a great shot of the moon. but im at work right now (5am) and can't set up the camera.

nice moonsshots...they rimind me of these i took 10-19-07. i tried to edit this one to make it a bit better. . . some of my posts are not so good...this one, i edited the gamma in the color.. .i have only trid this once, and the image is not too bad..

did you used gamma correction . . the darkness in your moon is what i got with gamma correction...but i guess you could have used a lower shutter speed and good iso to do that without editing, ...and a tripod . . .
