A 2,000gb card would make an excellent external hard drive!

The news item is a bit misleading. They are not going to make 2 TB memory cards soon! It's just the technical specifications of the new microcard allow for an address space of up to 2 TB.
Here's an overview (in Dutch, but the table is easy to understand): http://www.tweakers.net/nieuws/33713
Compact flash goes up to 128 GB. That doesn't mean that 128 GB CF cards exist....

What I don't understand is why they would opt to enhance the MMC format which, I think, is not really that popular compared to CF and SD. But then again, they (the Chinese) are big on commercial SVCD while the rest of the world is not...
And I agree with Jesper, it's just the format they're talking about, not an actual 2TB card itself.

The article in Dutch says: "The technology is developed to make local companies less dependent on foreign companies, because the Taiwanese and Chinese memory module builders currently use licenses (or patents) by overseas companies".
So it looks like the microcard is developed because the Taiwanese and Chinese want their own standard instead of paying royalties for U.S. patents.

Yup, that makes sense (in why they did it, that is). That's the exact same reason they developed the SVCD format and use it heavily. They didn't want to pay for the DVD license either.

What I find very interesting about the table in the Dutch article is the proposed bandwith ... 120 MB/s as opposed to 16.6 at CF
That certainly would be interesting!
Best regards,

A 2TB card would be fun: it could fit about
200,000 pictures in RAW format, or half a
million jpegs -- enough to wear out the
shutter mechanism of a MkII!
It still boggles the mind as to how something
like that could be built; assuming it's no bigger
than a CF card, the basic binary digital bit
would have to be stored in something of
submolecular in size, no?

i read it was about the size of SD.

MMC and SD are the same form factor, and you can use MMC cards anywhere you'd use SD, so it's not as odd as it may seem. SD just has extra circuitry built in to allow copy-protection.
