Lens arrived on thursday, but worked late, worked 16 hours on friday so no shots, finally a rain day today so despite the overcast, dark and rainy conditions out I go. First impressions, awesome piece of hardware, very very fast focus even on my XT, and the extra f-stop from my previous lens makes a difference in the light required for shooting. All shots handheld.
#1 the infamous first post of a duck

#2 Another duck, Green winged teal, this one was about 60 feet away and light rain.

#3 A turnstone taking a bath

#4 another turnstone

#5 last turnstone

#6 One of Mitch's "blue ducks". One thing I'll have to get used to after switching from a zoom to a prime is not being able to "pull back" for composition.

Did I mention I love this lens? :D Thanks for looking.

Gary, the yellow is the curb around the frieght wharf in Summerside, the turnstones hang around there picking up bait scraps from the people fishing for mackrel, And I hear you on the zoom via feet!:D Thanks!

Thanks Steve, your 300 f/4 will be lots, from what i've been told and read it couples well with the 1.4 extender if you need more reach. Dont waste any time posting once you get it.

Congrats on the new lens Trevor! Like Gary F. said "wait till you see this on a sunny Morning"!!! Looks good my friend. Yes fast and quiet focus is what took me by surprise when I got mine.
Love #5, but they are all nice and crisp. Have fun with it. Now I'm leaving to have fun with mine B4 the sunrise. A sunny day on the weekend over here :D

Hi Trevor,
Congrats on the new lens. It appears to be in capable hands. Tell me now, were you crawling through the swamp to get that duck? I've never seen a duck on PEI that will let you get that close. :)
Can't wait to see more of what you can do with it.

Thanks Marco, the rain just ended here so back to work at noon digging taters, another good week and I'll have more time to play with the lens.

Thanks Shirley, the duck was about 50-60 feet away, I cropped just enough to remove a female mallard that was to the right and only half in the frame, still not used to the composition difference between zooms and primes :D

The Canon 400mm f5.6 is one of the best bird lenses around and you have the shots to prove it. Congratulations. :-)

Thanks Mike!
Thanks Dan, Next time we get out you can stick it on your camera to see how it does. I got this one for a little over $900 shipping and taxes included off Ebay, it was being sold by "Henry's" a large photo-shop in Ont. It was a trade in, with two tiny little nicks in the paint on the tripod collar which were mentioned in the listing. If you ever decide to upgrade I'd recomend dealing with Henry's anytime.

Congrats on the lens, I only got to see the first shot though, cos of the image sizes and I'm only on a 56k dialup line. Could you please try and either put a 56k warning up in the subject, or keep the sizes smaller :(

Hi Dave, sorry about not posting a warning,I'll try to knock the photos down in size next time, Although I was sure I made them the same size as I usually post. Take care, I hope to do some more macro shots soon so I might see you in the other forum soon.

I really like my 400. You do learn to zoom with your feet! Great shots! How do you feel your Tamron compares to your 400?

Of course, we all know the quality of the lens for it's money, but, it also takes a good photog to capture these series! Great job Trevor and congrats on your new toy!

Thanks rw2,I loved the tamron lens, and for its price it knocked out some really good captures. So far( havent taken many pics with the 400 yet) I've noticed that I can take more distant shots and crop with less IQ loss than the Tamron. Much Much faster AF, and the feel of quality. I will however be hanging on to the tamron for times of need.
