Manual control of 420EX Flash

Hi all,
I ofetn use the internal flash in my G3 as a fill flash, however I have been unable with my 420EX to do this in conditions where my cmaera determines that no flash is required, there does not seem to be a wa of setting the flash mode from either on off or auto, it is only auto.

Any one know how to get around this?

I have been using the G3 with my 380EX. There is a switch on the back
of the flash for high speed sync and I usually turn it to there and then
make sure I am in Tv mode and the shutter speed is above 1/60". I
usually like to shoot at least 1/250 or so outdoors with the flash. I get OK
results this way.
