I am new to photography; having been shooting for about a year now. I am experimenting with all kinds of themes, including people photos. I realised fairly quickly that I am actually fearful of taking stranger's photos.

If you had a similar fear how did you over come the fear?

Street photography really isn't my gig. At least not yet. But I have no fear of taking people's pictures.

I think that it is true that people are particular. But when it comes down to it if they are on a public street or in other public areas they don't really have alot to complain about. But discretion is the better part of valor. If someone asks you to not take thier photo it is probably best to let it go at that. There really aren't too many reasons why you would HAVE to have THAT person's photo.

But you know, if you have your camera in hand then that is really declaration of your intent to take photos. And if you are discreet and quick about your shooting then you remove the number one obstacle in shooting strangers. You have just removed thier opportunity to object.

Take the picture quickly and then move on.

Now if you intend to use the images for certain purposes you may need a release. But you better look into that.

In short, have no fear. As long as you are quick most people won't object. But if they do object, respect thier requests.

Me: Hello. Maybe I have the honor of taking your photograph?

Them: Why?

Me: I'm an artist and love to shoot portraiture.

Look them in the eye and be respectful. 90% of people you ask will say yes.
