View Full Version : How long has your G Series been going?

Just read a post about a G1 dying at 4500 shots, this made me think, how long these things last, my previous Sony made around 17000 before packing it in.

My current G3 which I have had since November 2003, is around 8700 now and still running strong most of the time (seems to have a glitch with taking images from time to time, where you press the shutter and a few seconds later it fires, this is a new development, but fortunately rare).

How is everyone else’s doing?

My G3 is approx 8700 images so far also. From memory, we got it in about March 2003.

No real problems so far...other than the fact that it hasn't magically turned into a 10D!

I still love it dealy though.

cameras last for ever if you take excelent car of them and dont drop them and ****.....

ive got 10k easy on my s50 and it works like new (its been abused too and been dropped countless times)

my g2, i dont know how many pics are on it, but it had like 3k on the ticker when i got it (maybe even more before that) and i reset it and ive taken well over 1k since i got it. works just great.

cameras fail when you abuse them. if you take extra special care of them, theyll last as long as you want them to.

The interesting thing about the Sony was how it is failing (still can take pictures, the images are getting nosier and nosier, at the same time loosing saturation, kind of strange, almost as if the CCD was wearing out?

That little camera was taken into some fairly harsh environments and did get some good drops from time to time though! It is now four years old, I will be happy to get three good years of service out of my G3!

This was a specific problem associated with the G1. I think it is a fuse
issue. Haven't heard of this happening on the G2/3 or 5.

Oh, and 4500+ on my G3 without a hiccup (so far!), and mine hasn't turned
into a 10D either...but I would be happy if it would turn into a 300D.

My G3 has been going since December 2002, right now at ~8000 photos.

Only had to fix the LCD once, and free too :D

As has mine, I count ~12500 pics so far.

There were a couple of hot pixels on the CCD that I noticed after ~9months of use. I had them mapped out under warranty, but this did leave me without a camera for a month :( (I used this to justify buying an A70 though :D)

The only other problem I have with the G3 is a stuck pixel on the LCD, but this is not a major issue for me.

I'm lucky, the stuck pixel on my lcd went away.

G2 since January 2003,
so far 14,000 exposures

Everything still great apart from about 5 hot pixels on the sensor
... and the scratches and bruises that my handling has added to it :?

The hot pixels are not really an issue, I only noticed them very recently when taking night shots. Cloned out in PS in a second.

I once tried to take off the front cover, but did not succeed, as some of the screws were just too tight. However, all the screws that were not too tight have gone in the meantime...

Best regards,
Andy

My older G-1 was bought in May, 2001....LOTS of pictures, a few batteries, and never a glitch. Although, this Fall I am planning a careful 'opening', to check the tightness of internal screws [the likely cause of the fuse issue].

Over 11,000 shots on a modified G1. I did have a screw come loose and jam the zoom, but it was easy to fix by myself.
