Hello everyone, I have just finished watching the first couple of scenes of the Beta version of Jason Coles Passion of the Art DVD and all I can say is WOW.
Sure there are a couple of minor things that could be changed if you wanted to try and pull the thing to pieces but overall from what I have seen so far I am very impressed.

Are we supposed to choose PAL or NTSC? Does it matter, this will be played on my wide screen plasma off of my Play Station 3. PAL has higher quality right?

Hey Guys,
Awesome, the initial report from the beta testers have been very positive indeed :-)
Some changes to make, but we have put aside time next week to do this.
Im not sure if an American PS3 plays PAL or not? No idea. better check before ordering though as we want people to choose their format correct the first time.
Also Monday is the end of the month (man where has this year gone!!) so if you want this DVD at the special price place your order ASAP, as Monday at midnight Australian time the price goes to the normal price of $79US + Shipping. I will post a final reminder Monday morning.

OK, I'm coming out of the closet ... Oh, no, I'm all about wimmen, it's not that! But I am a Beta tester and have just gotten permission to speak up about the DVD. It's a little awkward as I have given Jason pages of observations and suggestions that he might fix so I can't say this is wrong or that should be better. But let me say that I would pay $100 just for the material in the four extensive photo shoots that Jason includes on top of the sections on equipment and model preparation. Not because of the cute girls (and they are cute girls) as we have some very glamorous ladies here in California, but because of Jason himself. If you are like me and don't have much experience with working with models, this DVD is priceless! It is going to change the whole way I will deal with models. I could just sit and listen to him talk to models for days. "Turn your boobs a bit more toward me", "Give me more curves", "Use your arms to give more cleveage", "Say, 'Jason"" (gets a great laugh from the girls), "Cover that nipple" (we don't get to see the nipple, sigh) and on and on. This is a must watch for any guy who needs a little help knowing what to do with the models. He has tons of tips and suggestions about the girls ... "Make sure they have their own private place to change." So obvious but so not obvious. This was the biggest thing for me!
A second huge value is watching him move and work and how he handles his cameras. A lot of time he uses a tripod with a grip head and seeing how he does that is incredibly revealing about what a professional does. But he also spends a lot of time on his belly with an angle finder ... which was worth half the price of the DVD for me as I have the angle finder (for use when mounting cameras in lighting trusses over boxing rings) but would never have realized how useful it would be for shooting from low angles as Jason demonstrates right up until he gets almost washed away by the ocean. And the angle finder is about 2-1/2 times the price of the DVD. He also shows how to use many lenses: 16-35mm, 24-105mm, 100-400mm (I would not have thought to use this lens for glamor but you can watch him shoot with it over and over), and a couple of others.
And something I have never heard anyone speak to before that Jason gives numerous clear explicit examples of is how to shoot for a magazine! Each of the four shoots includes why he shoots particular things, what needs to be included to get an editor's attention and make their life easier and what they need for a spread. I don't expect to shoot for magazines but I found it fascinating and something that gets very little attention and could be a bonanza for many glamor shooters.
As I said in the beginning, there are some things that need to be addressed. He refers to some items with terms that aren't clear or known to North Americans. It took me a while to realize that "hire" is what we call "rent." [There is a wonderful section where he takes us for a tour of Sun Studios where he did the studio shoot and they have equipment for hire.] He talks about a magazine thing called "deep etch" and I have no clue what that is ... I've asked him to explain. But they are all such little things. Oh, on the "Tips" panels the text refers to lenses as 100.0mm - 400.0mm, etc., which I think is odd ... I'm guessing the graphics guy was following the f-stop formula of f/nn.n. Just not stuff that impacts the learning value of the massive content.
On disclaimers: Jason isn't paying me. Jason isn't telling me what to say. I have never met Jason. I like Jason. I wish his final product image-wise for glamor was more like Paul Buceta whom we haven't seen in a while on POTN ... but that is mostly a post processing thing and again has no bearing on the DVD. I was planning on buying the DVD until the PM arrived from Jason ten years ago asking if I would Beta test it. He has no clue what I am going to say.
On my qualifications: Until now this is how I shot glamor (my daughter):

DVD UPDATE:
LOL Ten Years ago.. lololol I don't think it was quiet that long Dwight.. lololol
Thanks Dwight for your open and honest review. Thank you so much for all your feedback too. Thanks to people like Dwight, Jason "Mzad" Adams and Michael Vettas (All POTN people) the DVD will be a much better product. I have thirteen (lol thats just the way it worked out) Beta testers all giving me feedback. Some messages are coming through very clearly, like the cover, several people said it looks more like a porno than an Instructional DVD, so we are shooting a new cover this week, something more like a shoot setup and less like a hot model.... other things have come through too, like clarification of certain things im talking about, but again, they have come through loud and clear from many of the beta testers. What we are doing there is adding tips at the bottom of the page explaining more about what im saying or clarifying hard to understand speech. Dwight thought i said "Deep Edges" where i actually said "Deep etch's" - cutting the model out of the background. The feedback has been extremely positive. Looks like we might be on a winner here (thanks in a large part to you guys).
Now since we have all these changes, and since im such a perfectionist, it is going to hold the DVD up another couple of weeks whilst all the changes are made, but its not all bad news guys, first of all you will have a MUCH BETTER product, and secondly im including a 50% of voucher for everyone that orders before ship date for the next DVD (and based on feedback and response there will be a second DVD). If anyone is really upset with the date slip then im happy to give you a refund too, no problems at all. I just want this DVD to be the absolute best of its kind, even a bible for the budding model shooter. I have this entire week booked out getting the DVD changes made and getting the new cover shoot done. The fact that I have run a Beta program at all, not to mention how detailed this one is, shows my commitment to you to produce the best quality product available today i know there have been delays but when the wait is over it will very much be worth the delays :-)
As a small bonus, any Aussie POTN people that are interested in coming on the cover shoot please PM me, I can only take a couple so give me a good reason why you keen to come along :-) (fairest way of doing it so everyone gets a say!) shoot will be Thursday or Friday afternoon.

And this from the man who suggested delaying release until June! He must have taken a big bite indeed.
Actually, when I suggested June, I hadn't been asked yet ... so I guess Jason was right, it wasn't ten years but only seemed like it. At that time I thought June would be good because I am so busy at the time, but now June seems bad as my wife is taking me to Club Med at Cancun in June so I'm glad to have met my obligations to Jason. :-) Reviewing the DVD took a long time and was going very slowly until I switched from Windows Media Player to Nero. And the biggest surprise was that I don't think there's even one, "G'day, Mate" on the whole thing ... shows what I know about Aussies!

eheh B.O.B :P if only it was B.O.O.B :P
Ill add my review soon maybe after the cover re-shoot :P just so busy atm but i really don't have much more to say than what Dwight has said, i have seen a few other Glamour DVDs and was very disappointed, not only in content and presentation but overall professionalism and what they where trying to achieve, not once did i feel this with Jason's, i didn't feel ripped off or feeling flat after watching it and would not regret paying $80 for it, its one of those DVDs you have to watch quite a few times to absorb everything and each time you watch it you learn something new. My only real negative (which btw cannot be re-shot or fixed just yet) is the overall presence of Jason on-screen, its nothing against him as he isn't an actor nor a public speaker so he isn't in his element but on the flip side he is in his element when it comes to photography and that shines, and lets just say Jason has already decided to remedy this for the next DVD :) which i want already.
There really are only minor things which can be fixed, but at the end of the day its content and the content is excellent, informative, educational, perhaps a little advanced for the amatuer but still offers information that anyone could take on board.
Againa not much more can be said to what Dwight has said.
Ok so i did add a small review :)

Yup, an important point, Michael, you don't feel flat or lost or whatever after seeing this puppy. Rather than being, "Set your 4' x 6' softbox 2.1 meters from the model on the left and your 7' Octa on the right 1.2 meters ...." and other stuff that you might not have or can do, you see a style that is easy to emulate and tons of ideas. But best of all is watching that ruby player interact with those little tiny petite models! :-) Now I'm wondering if we'll get the second Beta or if he'll ship it off to another ten guys? I guess he'd soon run out of customers if he did that, eh?

Thanks for the teasers guys... Just makes the rest of us normal folks ;) want it even more.
You Americans really should learn to speak English like the rest of the world does!
Hire = rent
Rubbish = trash
Bonnet = hood
Boot = trunk
Carpark = Parking lot.
So if Jason sais:
"The bonnet and boot of this hire car from the carpark are rubbish!"
you will know what he is talking about.

Jason, I don't think you should worry about localised (or is that localized ;-)) wording. To try and cover every country's terminology would be a nightmare - and we wouldn't get the DVD before 2020 (that's the year, not twenty past eight at night!)
If people really don't understand you then maybe you could put a list up on your website.
Keep it rolling!

DVD Update
We shot a new cover last night :-) As usual its ALWAYS a pleasure to shoot Franchesca, and last night she didn't disappoint. We decided to shoot a new cover as many of the beta testers said the DVD cover looked more like a porn flick than an instructional DVD.
We are also re-shooting the equipment section first thing monday morning (about a 15 minute section). More feedback said that although the equipment section was awesome, it was too messy with the garage background. There were also some points being discussed that needed to be clarified. So we are re-shooting that again monday. The aim is still to meet the deadline of Friday for the DVD completion. Im quietly confident we will meet this deadline.... the duplicators are ready :-)

Yeah i think so.... (only just decided this this morning, and its not set in stone yet but...)
The problem with doing another beta is it will hold up the DVD another week or two.. we have definitely captured all the necessary things we needed to from all the Beta testers (we made 115 changes to the DVD lol) and no doubt more before its finished....
Its REALLY stressing me out (serious i thought I was going to bust a blood vessel the other day) how the DVD keeps slipping back more and more....

And not before vol. II is released! :D
Jason - don't fret about the hold-ups. It is quite normal in the publishing business - the difference is that the public are not fed daily progress reports.
In software, we would work out how long a project should take, and then multiply that by three to have any hope of it coming in before due date.
We are eager to get the goods, but perhaps your expectations of yourself are a little idealistic for this non-ideal world. We'll wait, knowing your high standards will get the DVD to us asap.
Cheers.

DVD UPDATE:
Today the final edits of the DVD will be finished from the Beta testers. Thursday the DVD goes to the duplicators for replication. (yeah!!!).
What does everyone think of the NEW cover... a lot of the Beta testers thought the old cover was too porn like (lol a view i absolutely do not share - but shows I listen).
http://www.jasoncolephotography.com.au/POTN/cover_v2.jpg
Note that this is the only proof i have from the designer. The final cover is one photo after this where the model is smirking confidently just a little bit... awesome shot..
Looks great and you did a fantastic job.
I was wondering what is the black piece that looks like a viewfinder from a Canon XL2 camcorder (located by your left hand where the camera lens ends).
I really like the layout of the DVD cover.
Jason Cole

The Black piece is actually a rear rim light.. a Broncolour Mobile head... if thats what you mean yes?
DVD Update:
Today we did the following:
(1) Sent the coverwork off to the printers
(2) Sent the DVD cover art off to the DVD printers
(3) Rendered (completed) the two beach scenes and the studio scene
(4) Rendered the intros and all the extras features
Whats left?
The garage shoot, a little more editing to do, that will be finished tomorrow. The DVD Gold Master goes to the duplicators Thursday or Friday... then its in there hands for the next couple of weeks....

LOL too funny Dwight....
Yes its nearly done.....
I cant begin to tell you how much time No Limit Pictures and myself have put into this project.. its pretty much consumed me for the last six months... every spare minute seems to be something to do with the DVD, im even behind in my regular Wedding and commercial work because of it now too.. so the next few weeks is catch up for me...
The last few nights have been really late finishes (like 2am) and early starts... there is sooooo much to do in a project like this to make it work right, flow well and consistent right through the whole DVD...

Well, I'm not sure we said it was porn looking, per se, but looked more like girlie pictures as there was nothing in any of the images that showed a suggestion of instructional material. Personally I was afraid that it just wouldn't get picked up off a rack by anyone looking for a glamor shooting tutorial.

Jason,
I didn't think that the cover looked like a porno, but someone else who came into my office and saw it on my desk said "What have you got porn in your office for?"... so i guess some think it is LOL.
New cover looks awesome mate, tells a much better story.

I don't see anything wrong with the first cover but I do see how it could be assumed to be a porn box. Having said that, the new cover really does tell a much better story that matches the theme of the video so I'll have to vote in favor of the new cover shot/art work too.

I just watched the trailer in Rob's sig... I wonder if you could sell this DVD to a PBS station? Maybe make it a two part mini series? I'd bet somebody would buy it. Sell the hell out of the DVD right now, then sell it to a network and resell it to the public after it airs on TV or cable etc.

The new new cover looks great. The old new cover had that rim light tipping off the edge of the lens which was really distracting. At first I thought it was only me but then I saw someone else commenting it and now that you changed it... must mean I'm not as anal as I thought I was.... =)

hmm - your cover...kinda has conflicting information on it.
the top one has:
"six months in the making"
then the bottom one with your face on it says:
"4 months in the filming and over 12 months in the planning"
but...apart from all these, the cover does look really good and professional!!!

yah i just notcied that too the whole 6months in the making is kind of "bland" i probably woudnt put that on there... I dont think ppl need to know how long it took you to make it. They just want to see the product. If you can point out other instructional videos that say on the cover "1 year to make, etc" then i guess it coudl work. I've never seen anything like that. Granted you want to probably hype this up..so maybe instead of 6months, chagne it to 2 years. @ the end it doesnt really matter and it might sell you more copies, since 2 years usualy equals more work, than 6months. More work = better product..yada yada..

OMG I just noticed a BIG error! You are going to have to do it again!
You are holding the camera wrong!!!
The left hand should be below the lens to help support it... NOT over the lens! Why didn't I notice that earlier.
Hope you are not holding the camera wrong in the filming or you will have to re-take that too.
Sorry to have to be the one to mention this to you. ;)

Hey Guys,
Yeah stoked its finished!!!
The Six months outside / 4 months inside error has been fixed now. I thought the time was important as it shows a lot of work has gone into the DVD.
Yep i know im shooting from the other eye (something i do on occasion) but for the shot we needed to do that. I don't think the average Joe will notice.
Today we make the masters to send to the duplicators, takes a day or two to do that, then they send me back a proof copy to make sure it actually works (lol) and the cover and everything looks great, then we go into manufacture :-) I would say based on this the DVD will actually start shipping in around three weeks time to people.
P.S. Akiwi.. my hand is holding the lens nice and tight :-)

Volume 2: What would you like to see?
Are you deaf? Nudes!
Seriously, I am surprised that you said Weddings wasn't popular, but since I haven't really investigated the market for instructional material (rather than marketing hype) I really can't give any constructive feedback. And if you are expert/experienced in glamor and weddings I'm not sure where you would next go. OTOH, a second volume (or more) of Shooting Glamour with more in depth treatment of techniques such as using smoke, creative lighting (such as more detail on overpowering the sun to get those dark sky backgrounds), exotic makeup, use of assistants, etc. Perhaps you could work with Ralph or FHM doing a few shoots where you make a DVD of spreads they will run and they can also run a few images of behind the scenes. Maybe after I get a bit more experience in this area I will be better prepared to ask the questions that could be answered in a follow-on DVD.

I was thinking, I get a LOT of people ask me about theme shoots.. as I do it a lot.... Do you think a website with an instructional shoot on it each month would be popular? Say we charge $25 per month for access to the site (to cover costs like the website, videographer, models etc etc). Each month we have a new shoot on, with finished photos as well as how we shot the shoot. Instructional. Would that appeal to the masses?

I think it sounds like a great idea as long as you stick to your end of the deal and keep it up to date. Although I think $25.00 a month is a bit steep.
Jason Cole
17th of April 2008 (Thu), 17:59
Yeah i need to work out costs, but im thinking a rough cost would be $1500 for the video team (the shoot and the edit), $500 for the model, another $1000 in H&M, assisting and location fees, and probably another $500 on the web design / creation / update fees. So there is around $3000-$3500 costs for the site each month (rough estimation).
DwightMcCann
17th of April 2008 (Thu), 18:01
I suspect that it would be a very tough sell and that interest would fall off after the first six. There is a lot of competition with YouTube having so many model shoots ... even if your quality is superb the content is still there on YouTube. If you are looking for ways to make money I expect running workshops would be much more profitable.
ABrownPhoto
17th of April 2008 (Thu), 18:46
While i find the idea to be great, i have to agree with DWIGHT. I personally wouldn't mind subscribing to the site, but fear many people wouldn't be consistent and the whole opperation would cost you too much time and $$. If you WERE to do it though, i think another great addition would be to have a section where the viewers can post THEIR version of the instructed theme and you could hold monthly competitions where everyone can vote on their favorite, and maybe the winner will get a free month or half off the next month's subscription. Having a competition with a prize like that would really help with sales because everyone would want to win, and just by having other postings, we would be inspired by others' work.
OH, and maybe take the 12 winners from the year (1 per month) and put them into another POLL to see which is the ultimate best (by votes) and the winner of THAT competition could win a chance to attend one of your professional quality shoots! (but that would get expensive huh?)
Man, here i am again, jumpng to conclusions...
In all, I would support your website idea by becoming a lifetime member!
lowcrust
17th of April 2008 (Thu), 19:09
It's a great idea but I think it would be VERY difficult to sell. People today expect everything to be free, it's the sign of the times. You would probably have a few schools and borderline amateur/pro's signing up but they might not amount to a big enough crowd to make it profitable and/or worthwhile. I think it would also take a lot of effort to keep them signed up after the initial interest fades off.
That's the reality of it as I see it, but speaking just for me personally I love the idea. If it were a place where you could do assignments and then have you comment on them, picking out a few students who nailed it and discussing those efforts more thoroughly, that would be a great place. But unfortunately I think it would be unrealistic in terms of money and time for you, unless you manage to get the average joe to pay for what he gets for free at Strobist and the like.
Just my POV. I'm sure someone told Lynda Weinman the same thing 10 years ago.
Hatch1921

Jason ,
What about 6 theme shoots with 1 shoot being released every two months? Maybe some post processing tips as well? You could spend a month shooting (if time allows) and then release the video series over 12 months. Have a pay-per-view plan in place. Similar to(as mentioned above) what Lynda.com does. This takes the pressure off of you having to come up with something every month on a subscription basis. Have a couple sample vids for teasers and then offer the series for "X" price. The bandwidth fees might be a concern...
Your work is stellar! I can’t see you having a issue of selling the vids.
High quality videos on DVD for "X" amount
Web quality vids for "X" amount
Just some thoughts… keep up the great work.
