LOL there wont be another one for a while.. its in the planning but im keeping it tight lipped now until its actually finished (its not even started or even planning on being started yet) - just at ideas stage.... im going to see how this one goes first... LOTS of money invested into this project.. However if I break even there will be a DVD 2 :-)

yah i was typing fast and didnt throw in a space...

anyway... i dont know how many dvds u pressed to start off with but i would suggest u buy an add in one of themost popular mags and see what happens..yes a full page add might cost 1000 or more..but it somthign that i think u'll make your money on very easily. The response from here alone is very good on Paper, not sure how many ppl orderd it or what tho. Either way, mag advertising is a very effecitve way to get the product out there.

and make sure u buy it in a US magazine....the market in the US is much greater

make sure u hype your stuff up with all your big jobs like MAXIM etc... that what will help you to make more sales.. "people love to see that stuff"

I would suggest a full page ad in "Amateur Photographer"; "Digital Photo Pro" and/or "Professional Photographer" UK publications. I so can't wait for this dvd!!!

Sorry mate, been sick as with the flu. The UK shipping takes about a week. Sorry for not getting back to you mate, been out of it for a few days with the flu.

DVD Update: the DVDs are arriving here First thing Tuesday. There was an error in the cases they told me but its all fixed now... shipping WILL ABSOLUTELY start early next week.

I looked into Shutterbug, $11000 US per page.

Here is an easy way to promote. You already have enough people here supporting you and willing to give you positive reviews. Put it on Amazon. The more an item has positive reviews the more likely it will be sold. Thus making your ranking soar. Soon your DVD will be showing up on links you never knew about.

About eight years ago I wrote a book. Stayed on Amazon selling 1-2 copies every few months (book was self-published). Then one day someone wrote a positive review. Sales picked up to about 5-10 copies a month. Then over a few months I had more positive reviews. On one particular day I was ranked 119 on Amazon. I still have the print out framed.

By the way I bought your DVD so when you follow thru with Amazon (or Barnes and Noble)and its a success you can send me your next published DVD "on the house".

DVD Update:

I have spoken to the Publisher who is now doing a part shipment. Im getting enough copies Tuesday to cover ALL of the orders so on Wednesday the DVD will finally start shipping to everyone... the wait is nearly over :-)

Thats a great idea about Amazon. I might take you all up on that. Sounds like a plan to me. How do you advertise on Amazon??? Yes 11K is expensive for a single page advert, but its one of those things that i will most likely do just to see if it pays off or not. Worst case scenario I will blow some coin, but it might actually pay off in the long run! Companies MUST get sales from it or they would not keep advertising and the mags would not be able to charge what they do. I have a full page advert coming out in Australian Better photography next month, so I will see how that goes too.

Dont waste your money with a ful page ad.

I'd go with a 1/4 to start with and see how that does. I know a guy I shot an ad for started with a 1/4 page in Baggers (motorcycle mag specializing in full dressed Harleys) and after a few months of running the 1/4 page, he was getting some great responce.

He jumped up to the 1/2 page which was a considerable amount more ad noticed no ump in sales for his product. FUll page ad's, unless ja-dropping are usually just glossed over. WHen the sneak in a 1/4 or 1/2 page ad with a article or some other section of the magazine are usually looked at more because the reader is paying more attention to what is on that page while reading the article.

Ask if they can put the ad beside a article that has to do with modeling or lighting since thats what your DVD is about

I think full page is a must and base my opinion on the way I look through magazines myself. I rarely bother looking at qtr. page ads, the last time I did was because I had a specific reason (researching canvas wraps). 1/2 page ad if designed well might grab my attention.

When I'm looking at my 'tog mags I read nearly every full page ad I turn over to, scanning first incase it's an ad I've seen a 100 times and then reading it if it's new to me. (The last one I read yesterday was for large format printers). Even more so if the fp ad is close to the front.

You don't have to per se advertise on Amazon. Your supporters on this forum basically do the advertising for you when they give a positive review and cite examples of why they liked your product.

I think most members here will agree that when shopping on Amazon and trying to decide between two products that they will give the most weight to the product with a slew of positive reviews. Not just positive reviews but reviews intelligently written with thought behind it.

My book at one time was highly ranked in its subject matter. What happened next was other related sites elsewhere linked to my book as well as others. So, in essence these other sites were advertising for free for me. The benefit for them was they got a cut from Amazon, but it didn't come out of my pocket.

But with the exposure comes a price. Amazon gets a cut of the overall price. I don't know what it is for a DVD. But you can go to "Amazon Advantage" to get more information.

My opinion would not be to take out a full page ad. Obviously, a full page ad will get more exposure than a smaller ad. But I think a product that is in the same industry related magazine will still get read by many more people than what you may think. Just because a magazine has a readership of say 100,000 it can still be read by many more. Visitors to libraries and waiting rooms will read it. A magazine laying around for a few months will still get read.

I would test a smaller ad first. To track the success you could create a different weblink in order to track sales. Or, they would have to put in a specific code you created for that magazine.

I have seen some companies post two ads in a magazine with two different codes just so they could track which ad created the sale.

Hope this helps or gives you some ideas.

the amazon idea is great, also on amazon you can put video's in the add's, or at least amazon does anyway

if you do that and have the video I believe that would help out as well

also if you put it on amazon all the people here can also put in reviews, I know that I certinally would, you dont need to buy it from amazon to put a review there, as long as you have an amazon account you can review anything I believe

if you target other big websites like this one you should get a great deal of interest and word of mouth would carry it pretty far

I like the Amazon idea a lot. I certainly pay close attention of user reviews for almost everything and have been swayed by many of them without disappointment. I also do reviews (they nag you incessantly for them) for a lot of stuff. If you can get onto Amazon for under an arm and leg (and less than a full page ad) I'd go that route first. We'll get you reviews and many of us will get you links, too.

But, yes, my wife spent a year as an exchange student in high school (way over in Perth I think) and has always wanted to come back and spend a few days on the east coast. We're thinking of coming for a week (wife has very hard time getting away from her job in defense) and setting up shop with/near Jason. There is talk that I might even come a week earlier. There are several guys that I'd like to meet face-to-face and maybe shoot with. A POTN gathering would be spectacular ... I am not as impressive in real life as on the 'net ... but my wife and daughter are! :-) At this point it is 80% likely to happen.

Jason, I can't wait to get my DVD. And I hope you make a good profit from this adventure.

I like the advertising ideas everyone is offering and hope you try some of them. I think a few well placed, fair priced banner adds could help too. Getting as many good and possibly free reviews posted online certainly couldn't hurt either. Amazon is huge and would no doubt help sales but don't forget the smaller sites. Epinions.com, Nextag.com and any others everyone can think of are a must. Hit every version/language/country you can too.

Exactly, only just duped the first dvd's. I'm sure that with some promotion and marketing; you'll have done great by the end of the year. Also, this will probably have a shelf life of several years technologically speaking. Once you've established solid reviews and sales, I think some major retailers would be very interested.

In my defense I did tell her that I ordered it but I think she initially thought it was an XXXX DVD and thus the call.

watched it again this morning, i must say jason i really like the changes, i prefer the new look equipment chapter, but cannot tell which beach shoot you re-did, Alix or Fran, im going to say Fran because i dont recall the overhead setup time-lapse shot, i havent watched the workshop chapter again yet, but, so far much better.

No idea.... all I can tell EVERYONE is that ALL DVDs have shipped...

You will have to be patient....

Having said that.. the phones ringing off the hook today with people telling me how much they love the DVD :-) had about 20 calls so far....

i know bro...i was just chiming in on the thread to be a smart ass. I've been so swamped lately I wouldn't have been able to watch had it come in!

But I AM anticipating it's arrival.

I didn't get a chance to watch it yet:( but I did manage to open the white envelope and check out the goodies. Great design and layout on the dvd insert, BUT and I'll be honest.... I thought the dvd case was lacking in the quality department. It felt cheap and flimsy.

Hope no-one minds me being honest and I'm sure the dvd will be amazing when I finally watch it tomorrow.

Interesting comment about the packaging as i went for the premium packaging too. thats the most expensive unit they do. They have a cheaper version which is basically a DVD in a sleeve, but i wanted quality product. Just for my records, how could it have been improved?

It was a first impression thought, when I held the case for the first time it felt like the plastic case material was too thin compared to every other dvd case I have(shop bought movies). The thin plastic sleeve which holds the insert felt way too loose; like it was made for a slightly bigger case. When I opened the case, the two plastic peg things which hold a pamphlet; that I think are pressed out from the main body of the case had kind of rough and sharp edges... that's pretty much it. Ofcourse this first impression thought lasted a whole 3 seconds.

Now I actually feel kind of stupid that I over analyzed a dvd case:confused:
