Finally got to watch the video today. I was impressed with the picture quality. Though it is not a "movie" quality picture it is very good. I played it with my PS3 on a 65" DLP Samsung and it looked fine. With some earlier posts about IQ I was starting to think it was going to look like a youtube or something.

The actual content is second to none. It is the best "how to" I have seen. Congrats to you Jason!!

Jason Cole

Awesome glad you like it.

Yes the video quality issue got well blown out of hand...

Since that issue the orders have really dropped off... it might be a coincidence and it might not be... who knows... but its very disappointing.

Got mine yesterday, and finished watching for time numero uno shortly after. I am not sure what the deal is with people complaining about he image quality. It looked nearly the same as any other DVD on the 65". It wasn't distracting at all. However, what was the deal with you not being mic'd? The audio is iffy at times. In regards to the DVD content, I was pleased, and want more. It wouldn't make sense to have Volume one on the DVD, unless there was a Volume two. Also, what was the deal with all the flys in the one beach scene? Thanks for making the DVD Jason!

Did a little bit of research and found that some PAL -> NTSC conversions have a known problem of bringing jagged lines into videos. here's a small case http://forum.videohelp.com/topic300639.html.

On that note, THIS VIDEO IS 1000x BETTER THAN ANY OTHER KIND OF PHOTOGRAPHY INSTRUCTIONAL THAT I'VE EVER SEEN. I can't thank Jason enough for taking the time out of his schedule to make a video like this for all of us to grow from. I've watched the dvd about 4 times already and so far i've picked up something new each time. Mr. Cole is the reason why I joined POTN in the first place, and awesome insructionals like this dvd give me even more inspiration to check these forum everyday for new threads from him :)

I haven't had the opportunity to say it yet, so i'll say it now. Thank You Jason :)

btw - when watching the dvd i've noticed that you've got a set vision of the shots that you are looking for. When you usually shoot, how many shots do you think you take on average for the entire shoot (or for each scene)?

Jason,

On some of the studio shots, you used ISO 400. It seems with those studio lights, shooting at ISO 100 shouldn't be a problem. As there a specific aperture you were shooting for so you had to go to 400? I guess the noise on a Mark II isn't bad at ISO 400 because I wouldn't think to shoot at anything higher than 100 on a 5D.

No higher than 100 on a 5D???

That sounds a bit pixel-peeper to me...

I only just upgraded from a 20D which shot fine at up to 800, and 1600-3200 with a light hit of noise reduction.

.... I wouldn't think to shoot at anything higher than 100 on a 5D.You sure there isn't a 4 in front of the 5 and a 0 behind it? (450D :p )

I'm sorry, but I have seen the images that a 5D can produce from ISO 3200, indoors, with speedlight flash..... and without any noise reduction software. They were fantastic!

I shot an entire indoor event with my 30D @ ISO 400/800 (with 580EX II) and made 5x7 prints strait from the memory card and they turned out great.

Anywhoo.... that is not the purpose of this thread! Sir. Cole,

Odd...

Maybe it's all in the processing :D

Admittedly i often run an action that i created which blends an opaque duplicate NR'd layer back into the original for anything i consider could benefit from it which takes care of any noise without the usual NR'ing problems.

I used ISO 400 to bring put the background more, bring in a little more of the ambient light... such as in the garage, the strobes were easily bright enough to light the model, but the background was a fair distance away. At ISO400 there is virtually no noise on the MKIII.

Actually ISO H (3200) on a MK III is awesome, its prints out virtually noise free, I have never had a complaint yet and i use high ISO's all the time at Weddings too.

In other news..... we are starting to plan Volume 2 now...

Thankyou so much to everyone for your feedback and support. Sales are starting to pick up now too, and the ads haven't hit the stands yet either... mainly word of mouth..

The Passion of the Art - Shooting Glamour Volume 2

So any suggestions please email me.

ETA - no idea, dont even ask!!!! :-) maybe a year away....

Its not set in stone yet, so far its just meetings and discussing ideas....

Things we picked up from DVD 1:

-Better Audio - we now are the proud owners of wireless mic's !
- Video qaulity - im nto sure this is a huge issue to the bulk of you but we will look at this
- DVD Case - will be more solid

Shoots on the DVD:
- Indoor shoot - Maybe Stacey at the Hydro Majestic. Not decided yet.
- Artistic shoot (no nudity, but showing how to shoot really good body / torso / figure shots)

Information:

- How to approach an editor and getting your work published
- More advanced lighting
- Maybe some post processing tips (not sure about this yet)

So im currently collecting information:
please email info@jasoncolephotography.com.au with any ideas or things you would like to see in DVD2.

Im also trying to think of the new name too...

The Passion of the Art - ????????????? ???????????

oh i second the workflow...I'm all a mess when it comes to that.

richardj7
4th of June 2008 (Wed), 14:26
Second the workflow, too. RAW rarely comes out of the box with such vibrant colors and focus.

It may be too much to ask because of competition, but knowing an approximate cost of a shooting (what models are paid, and content of release, MUA, assistants, studio rental, etc.), and subsequent sale price to editors, magazines would be a plus, as well as detailed approach methods. But, again, competition, may kill that idea...:)

I spent the last 2-1/2 days with Frank Doorhof from the Netherlands (Holland) who considers himself a High Fashion Photographer whom many of you know or at least know about. He is here to do a workshop in L.A. that I have mentioned in the past. We are personal friends and he and his wife stayed with us. He helped me for a couple of hours in the studio the first evening as I had arranged for a model who also brought a photographer girlfriend. We spent most of the time all chatting around my living room. It was fun and I learned of a few new things to try.

Two things: (1) Jason promised him a DVD that had not arrived when he left to come here for the workshop ... this is just a subtle hint to Jason. (2) We talked about the DVDs, both his three and Jason's. It is clear that they have vastly different views on many levels. Frank is not anxious to do more than provide information in his fairly dry Dutch humor manner which is his true person. Jason goes to great lengths to share himself and his models, his flare and style. I greatly enjoy both styles but concede that I have more fun watching Jason and feel that I am almost participating with him. Frank is much more classroom style. Frank is much more self assured than Jason. He feels he knows the best way and has lots of business experience which has been honed by the "odd" business climate in Holland which I believe leans toward the Socialistic. Jason is more personable and friendly. Frank leans heavily on his deep knowledge base, his study of many huge names, his personal contacts with well knowns (he is adding what I might call "Celebrity Photography" to his arsenal) and is more a teacher of facts. Jason has first hand knowledge and the blarney most often associated with the Irish, like me. I love to be a spectator to Jason's interactions with everyone. Frank doesn't interact much with others.

Frank's wife does most of his videos with a small handheld. His focus is on technical information and style and he doesn't worry about that. His DVDs come with a plain CD sleeve, no jewel case, so he can keep them inexpensive. He does not overly worry about production values. Jason is very keyed to high production values and slickness in theme and presentation.

For any who wonder what Frank and I did for two whole days ... we drove around the countryside taking pictures of abandoned gas stations, bridges, the foothills, inside a grocery store, inside a winery tasting room (Fess Parker's [of Davy Crockett fame] without tasting the wine, as Frank is a beer person and our local micro-brewery, Firestone, was closed), a railroad caboose, roads (shot from the ground looking down the yellow lines), and a couple of eateries. Frank is a big American movie fan, has a stunning home theater (I saw pictures), and is an avid reader. His wife dotes on him and willingly acts as his pack mule so he has hands free to shoot ... she is a very tall, bright young woman who runs her own computer sales/service business ... they like Windows Vista.

So, I didn't mean to steal this thread, but I know there are many subscribers who are interested in knowing about alternatives and about other successful POTN members in this area. I haven't downloaded my images of Frank "in the wild" yet but I will and will post in the POTN Member Activities and try to remember to provide the link here.

Again, I apologize if this smoke offends anyone. Oh, Frank is a ModelMayhem member.

I'd rather workflow and post processing were left out entirely, I'd buy a different publication for that.

I'd be happy with advanced lighting and equipment information, more studio and location examples, how to scout for appropriate locations or studios if you don't have your own. Hiring models and a MUA. Budgeting for shoots. Different types of glamour shooting techniques i.e Low/High key, props, studio equipment and backdrops etc. faq's, do's and dont's, maybe release/copyright stuff if it's closely related..... that kind of thing.

Jason,

Having viewed your DVD (Again!) I feel I must add something further...

What strikes me is that your DVD isn't about classroom teaching, it's not about, here is a list of topics that we are going to learn today....

It's about "come and spend 3 hours with one of POTN's great photographers - and he'll explain what he's doing and how he does it". Come and spend an afternoon with him in the real world and learn as he goes about his day job".

I almost feel that I have an "access all areas" pass that allows me to watch you and look over your shoulder (which at times, when you tell us to look at your LCD on the camera, it feels like I am doing) as you talk to the viewer as though they really are stood with you in the studio, on the beach or wherever.

Thank you for the effort you (and all of your team) have put into this.

It's appreciated.

TJ

Yes, I am always late to the table, sigh.

Photos of Frank or Photos of Marney Smith the model? Actually, in either case I may not have time. I am shooting Brooks & Dunn tonight with my assistant (who is covering Smokey Robinson for me while I'm in Cancun) and will be doing fast processing on them tomorrow. Tomorrow evening I have a VIP event with the Cherry Poppin' Daddies (yes, real name) to shoot. Sunday we leave for Cancun for a week. I may try to get Marney up before then. Awesome, the bonus stuff is cool, especially the outakes, and yes the angle finder is a god send!!!

Funny thing is it ALWAYS used to fall off my camera, then recently i dropped it on the ground accidentally and now it fits really nice and snug on there... :_) (dont try this at home folks).

Glad you liked the DVD!! :-)

Whoops, I thought I did:oops::lol:

I LOVED the dvd, absolutely excellent. Watched it 3 times now. You make it look easy! I was especially interested in the lighting aspects (for obvious reasons) and how you deal with directing the models, I'm saving up the spare cash for a portable light setup at the moment. Looking forward to a second edition;)

Jason

I got my DVD a couple of days ago and enjoyed watching it. Thanks for the fast delivery!!

A couple of questions.

1. I know you shoot outside at around F16-F22 in the sun to expose for the background. Are you trying to match the background, have it a little brighter or a little darker than what your lights are set for? I did not notice you taking an ambient reading so was hard to tell exactly what you were looking for.

2. The type of shooting that you are doing are you leaving any extra room for cropping or what you see in the viewfinder is what you are delivering to the client?

A suggestion for the next DVD would be to display the image we are seeing in the video camera. Several times you see one thing through the video camera and the image displayed after the shutter click is a different image. It would help your audience what your are demonstrating.

It would also help to let us know where you are setting up the main light and why. Are you looking for a particular lighting pattern on the face?

Again, I really liked the DVD and can't wait to try out what you are teaching. The bad thing about the DVD is now I have to go out and purchase some more equipment...hahahah.

I hear you on that. I didn't even know those existed (pardon my ignorance). It'll be so helpful - particularly with automotive stuff as well as 'people' shots.

Hey Pyterps (where does that name come from?)

I shoot at F16-22 on a bright day, i dont measure the light outside, its not an exact science. On a bright day F16-F22 will be fine, pretty much for any Australian conditions. Im told its a little different overseas in some countries where the sun isn't as bright. I prefer a slightly darker background (maybe 1/3rd of a stop) than the model to bring the model out much more.

Im leaving a little more space in some shots for cropping, but mainly over to one side for text or other photos. DPS scenes i always do one wide shot (very wide) and the rest tighter, that way if the magazine really wants more space they can use the wider DPS shot to create it (take at same angle and aperture)

Yes we tried to put as many photos as we could up, but the timeline for the DVD and the other delays getting it out slowed us down a little bit. There are a few small mistakes in he DVD where we put up the wrong photo (Doh!) but overall i think we got it pretty right. the next DVD will be even better than this one.

With the main light I try and either set it up straight over my head as per the beach scene of Alix on the DVD, to get straight even lighting on the entire model or i turn it hard to one side and get rim lighting as per Stacey in the Garage. It totally depends on the look im going for.

Thanks again for your kind words, the DVD has been a huge hit, I have had so many positive comments back about it, even more than i imagined... awesome...

Its funny how a few people are still holding back though, like they pay thousands for equipment but wont pay $69 to learn how to use it... hehe

Jason,

Thanks for getting back with me and I agree that it is very worth $69. Any reason you chose 69....hahahah.

PYTERPS comes from my Air Traffic Control background. My last name is Perry and when we communicate with another controller we have to end every conversation with operating initials; so to cops know who to arrest when something goes wrong. It is normally the first and last initial of your last name, PY. The TERPS comes from the job that I do with creating approaches for aircraft to fly into or out of an airport, normally when the weather is really bad. It stands for, TERminal ProcedureS, TERPS.

One other question I have is with camera height, as in the garage shoot. I have always been trained, in portraiture.

Full Length...camera at the navel.

Another part everyone needs to see is that the customer service is spot on and thank you for taking the time to keep posting to the forum and giving POTN credit on the DVD. Top notch on your part.

Dave

2/3rds...camera at the bust

Headshot...camera at the chin.

From what I saw on the video it looked like the camera would have been around nose level.

Jason Cole

yeah i guess i shoot different to a lot of people, like i haven't had any professional training, so i dont know all the rules to follow, which maybe isn't a bad thing in some ways... sometimes people get so tied up in the rules, they dont shoot well or different, they get stuck in a rut, so i guess sometimes ignorance is bliss hehehe

$69 ... its a VERY long story, calculated by the bean counters.....

Jason,

Again, thanks for all your help and I was just asking a few general questions that may help others looking at the thread.

The 69 thing was a joke as it is some folks favorite position if you know what I mean.

Might be an idea to insert "MOVED:" in the title? - for us people that don't pay attention!

What a great investment!!! Thanks for the effort you have put into this DVD.
I will have to break the sekonic out of its plastic bag now, and try it out.
Do you think there is scope for a similar DVD or part thereof that deals specifically with canon speedlite setups of the same sort of subjects?
Cheers again, its definitely a winner.

Jason, thank you one thousand times over.

I received the DVD a couple days ago and have watched it twice since. I will be applying many of your techniques for my next bikini model beach shoot in a week.

Few questions that came to mind when I watched the DVD that I hope you can clarify for me.

1) What time of day do you normally start your beach shoots?

(Very early I would assume - I did notice that you said your shoot ended up running rather late into the day (full sun) as well so I found that interesting)

2) How long do your shoots normally run for a single and dual model shoot?

3) How many watts do you normally shoot your strobes at on the beach with the softbox attached?

4) Does the scrim normally bother you with its shadows in the photos? I have always been a bit hesitant to use a diffuser on beach shoots because I really do not like the shadows from the diffuser in the sand / feet etc.

Do you normally just crop the top half of the model's body in the photo when you use one so you would never see the scrim's shadow anyway?

Just curious what you recommend on going about this topic.

Needless to say, the DVD is STELLAR.

I would have no hesitation recommending your DVD to any fellow photographer. I know it was a ridiculous amount of work for you but I seriously SERIOUSLY hope you consider making a second edition. I would buy it in a heart beat as would many others.

Sorry for all of the questions but if the opportunity is there for me to ask the man himself who made this DVD rest assure I will take full advantage of it! :)

Hi Chris,

Glad you liked the DVD :-)

To answer your questions:

(1) The earlier the better for the Beach shoots. The shoot went longer due to filming.
(2) shoots usually run for 2-3 hours, sometimes longer if i really like the model (like Emma)
(3) I usually shoot at full power (Maximum light) Around 600 watts.
Nah the scrim shadows are generally blended out if its a full shot, and most of the shots i try and do with the scrim are half shots, so you cant see the shadow.

Im so glad you like the DVD, and yes it was an insane amount of work.. lol

Heh Jason :)

Now that this topic has been moved I can actually post up here... wahoo.

Anyhow... just wanted to say all along that I'm soo greatfull for you taking the time to compile this DVD for us all... I learned a lot and considering I'm just getting into photography... it was extremely easy to follow along and learn from you.

With that... after watching the DVD I actually went out recently and bought two portable flashes (for now a 580ex II and a 580ex) and decided to get into this off camera lighting. After watching how you used lighting to change the look of the scene, how you set things up even in daylight... wow... never even knew one could do that... Yes... it's not a Broncolor setup (ha... still have to find some lightstands and such)... but heh... us rookies have to start somewhere eh? :)

Ha... and seriously... my recent foray's at night with colour gels may not be the most inspiring... but... again... it's a start.

So... I'm just learning how to use my external light sources, only shooting static objects for now until I can figure out positioning, light output and such... but... I'm workin' on it... and learing more and more each time. Hopefully soon I can move up to people... ha... but one little step at a time.

Thanks for the inspiration Jason... this is a whole new world to me... and again... after watching your DVD... I just had to learn more.

****************************

Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony... whatever the brand... doesn't matter if you are in a similar boat as me looking to learn more about photography and setting up a shot... this is the video to watch. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=512164)

hi jason, just a stupid question.

i have a few friends who have shot professionally here, i tell them that the softbox output should be the same from top to bottom so it isnt imperative that i point the middle of the softbox to the model's face. they tell me that it isnt the case.

who's correct?

when i shoot i usually place the softbox in such a way that upper end of the softbox is pointed a few inches above my model's head so i get illumination from top to bottom and i dont waste light. I sort of imagine light from a few inches of the top of the softbox going past my model giving extra light to wrap on top of her head.

Jason Cole
26th of August 2008 (Tue), 20:09
Yes thats true, the brightness of the light does taper off towards the edges, the brightest spot is in the centre of the softbox.
