Hey All,
The Passion of the Art - Shooting Glamour can be purchased here:
www.jasoncolephotography.com.au
Another successful shoot (thats number two – one more to go) brings us one step closer to a finished DVD. This DVD promises to be an excellent guide to shooting a magazine shoot and a glamour shoot. Its shaping up very nice indeed. One more shoot (the beach) to go and the DVD editing can be finalised. The DVD will have an indoor location shoot, and an outdoor location shoot.
Here are two examples direct from the DVD.
http://www.jasoncolephotography.com.au/POTN/DVD01.jpg
http://www.jasoncolephotography.com.au/POTN/DVD02.jpg
The DVD will show you how to shoot these actual photos (and several others), as well as posing the model, and all the equipment and camera settings used to get these photos. Each piece of equipment is explained. You will find out why we use it, what we use it for, how much it is, and see it in an actual shoot.
The retail for the DVD will be $59.95 US and now includes shipping.
Im just gauging how many units im going to do initially, so if your interested in the DVD can you please email me at info@jasoncolephotography.com.au and I will add you to the list.
Thanks in advance :-)
Note that these are RAW unprocesssed images above.

Working now, these look great.
How well would the techiques used for the indoor shoot be able to be used by someone with little space at home. Also how much would shipping to the UK cost.

Hey All,
Thanks for all your replies and emails, I have a list now on my email that I will contact once the DVD is actually ready to ship. There is no extra charge for shipping anywhere in the world. the US $59.95 price tag includes shipping. Here is a detailed list of whats on the DVD. Note that the beach shoot isn’t on this list yet as we haven’t shot it yet (we do it Saturday). The Beach shoot will be o nthe DVD. There are three models in the shoot.
Instructional DVD – Shoot Schedule
DVD Contents:
CHAPTER 1: Introduction
Start of DVD, introduction from Jason Cole. Things to discuss in intro include:
- Welcome to dvd – briefly touch on our magazine experience and in final video show some photos of previous magazine shoots. Explain how photos are generally themed etc.
- Explain that the contents of the dvd are how I do it, not necessarily how everyone does it
- Explain whats on the dvd
- Talk briefly about the book and the release date
CHAPTER 2: Equipment
- explain the mobile – specifically explain the Verso A2
o multiple channels,
o RF trigger, as opposed to the red sync lead vs Infra red trigger
o power dock – vs generators for strobes
o Mono block – Bowen’s heads ac or generators
- explain the cameras used
- Explain what lenses we use and why
- explain the angle finder
- explain the softboxes and diffused light as opposed to the ring flash
- Scrims – what is it? why do we use it and what does it do?
- Explain the light meter (basic explanation of how it works)
CHAPTER 3: preparing for the shoot
- making sure you don't forget anything – putting the shoot together in your head
- raw vs jpg
- explain DPS (Double Page Spread) and how to shoot it
- explain the need for H&M and styling to be done professionally, cut to Michelle to explain what is required from a model
- Working out scenes – storyboarding: how many scenes are needed, add extra scenes. Explain how editors think. You might think this is the best ever shot, but that doesn't mean that the editor will, so give the editor choice.
- Location location location
- Explain backgrounds and how the subject should be matched to the surroundings
- Deciding what apertures to use, why, and balancing lights

- Posing and communicating with the model.
- Looking for faults in the scene, side creases, bent arms etc etc.
- Checking the background
- Colouring the background

As far as shooting with little space, the DVD isnt really about that, its more about how a professional shoot is put together and all the lighting and equipment we use. Its a really good insight into what is usually a very closed and guarded world. You will pick up a stack of information from the DVD about all sorts of stuff. A lot of the video camera angles are straight down the barrel of my camera too. Not too much funky stuff, more just instructional video (but a very polished finished production). Its costing me an arm and a leg to do this DVD :-)
Also note that the $59.95 price tag is a POTN special price. The normal will be $79 US.

Hi,
i understand the need for it and i would be one to actually even buy it. I also know that there seems to be market for it because many people criticize paid websites, but seriously guys, sending DVD and paying for shipping and burning in 2007? Isnt better just paid website for this kind of tutorials? Jason have power to break that "feel of paid websites" and 4 GBs should be easy to host almost anywhere...

Yeah I thought about a website too, but I think overall this is a much better way to distribute the information. It has a nice cover and a really nice look and feel about the DVD. Its a nice keepsake as well as an awesome reference too.
I must be stirring up some nests with the other Pro's as yesterday I had two emails asking me not to release the DVD and share out all the hard earned secrets... haha
Note that at the moment the DVD is only available in PAL, if required we will do an NTSC format DVD too, however most players play both these days. No VHS or Betamax copies planned... hehe

If they feel threatened, they will just have to try harder now won't they :D
I don't think they have too much to worry about. It is one thing for a photographer to learn the secrets, it is another for them to be applied.

All your orders have been saved in email. when the DVD is finished I will post a website link that you can all order from. Thanks so much for all your support too, this wouldn’t have been possible and wouldn’t have happened without your continued encouragement.
The DVD will have the following features:
An explanation of each piece of gear, why I use it, what I like about it, what I dont, how much is it?
Three complete shoots, being a beach shoot (scheduled for next week), a location shoot (mechanic workshop) and a studio shoot at Sun Studios Australia (next Friday).
Its looking very Smick indeed.
There is also a behind the scenes section with some funny out takes, its a lot harder being on camera than you think!!!!

Hey Guys,
Just letting you know there is going to be a slight delay of around two weeks with the DVD. We shot a model that didn't really work out that well on video (awesome girl - just not what I wanted for the DVD) - so we are reshooting one of the scenes now. The thing is the weather is forecast to rain until the 9th of December, so that will hold up the shooting. It will be worth the wait in the end though!
I will have a pre-order page up in about two weeks on my website. Stay tuned! The DVD is shaping up VERY nicely indeed.

Fran has actually brought quiet an interesting twist to the DVD. She is brand new and has never done a shoot before. This was her FIRST ever shoot (a test shoot) to see how she went. She's awesome in front of the camera but needs a bit of help along the way, so that will be cool to show how I handle a new model (something that a lot of you will no doubt struggle with like I did when I started). Should make for some interesting viewing indeed :-)
A lot of the other editing is well under way now too, so although the reshoot will hold the DVD up a week or two it wont hold it up too much longer.
Note that these are all RAW off the camera images....

He's keen and passionate about it and together, we are making something better than what's on the shelves now... something much more interesting and much deeper than the normal video. I have personally explained EVERY piece of gear i use and why i like to use it... that on its own is invaluable information... and then on top of it you have a location shoot, a beach shoot and a studio shoot, all explained.

haha thanks Dwight.
Yeah see there is a LOT more work in this than I thought...
pots processing takes ages and coordinating models with the design and production teams takes ages too... so thats the delay.
I have found the model (above) that is absolutely perfect for the last shoot of the DVD (the re-shoot) however she is really busy, the production team are busy too, so im trying to get them on a date where we can all shoot, then there is the weather too (its a beach shoot) - so there are a lot of circumstances that all need to come together to make it work. Still its going along nicely now, once this last shoot is done, in the next two weeks hopefully, most of the other editing is being done now, so we should have a finished product by the end of January. There is so much work (and cost) in this project. It has given me a different opinion of ripping DVD's too.. not that i have done it before, but i know heaps of people that have...

Keep your eye on the ball, but don't exhaust yourself. If I can help in any way. Marketing in Germany ? Let me know. Will definitely make you a few sales.

Yeah its funny how things change your mind.
See something else too, im funding ALL if this out of my own pocket too, so if people rip it off it s going to cost me personally a lot of money. Im not like Sony or companies like that that are huge and plan on a certain amount of theft of their product. I know it will happen, but im hoping that it will be minimal and people will do the right thing as if the DVD goes well, there will be more :-) at the very least I will be happy (at least initially) if i break even.
Thanks Akiwi, much appreciated mate, when the DVD is complete I will send you a copy. Only thing is that it is in English only at this stage, is that ok for German audience?
Funny that with a name like AKiwi i thought you were a New Zealander...haha

lol! but i'm busy in january. it's only around xmas time that i get a week off from work and can do whatever i like...
and unlike you..i dont have any new toys to play with...oh oh, wait a minute, i can play with the firmware on my MKIII! :-P
Yup, downloaded the firmware this morning and will install tonight. I have a boxing card to shoot Thursday (weigh-in's, 5D/24-105mm f/4 into lighting truss, posed shots) and Friday (dressing room shots, etc., and then the fights, Ring Girls, etc.) Hoping the firmware helps. Anyway, have you matched all your lenses to the body? Have you gotten familiar with the white balance registration? Complete familiar with Live View? Highlight preservation (I can't remember what they call it.) WiFi? There's gotta' be something you haven't fiddled with to take your mind off this DVD. If you want to drop by I'll loan you Frank Doorhof's three DVDs. And I have some from a PPA affiliate!
All good things take time ;)

DVD Update
Morning all.
Well the DVD is turning into a bit of an EPIC. Production is going along nicely though. We did another edit day Sunday, and have two more edit days planed next Friday and Saturday, 8am until late both days. The Content is looking really polished, much more professional than a lot of other DVD's I have seen around (and much more costly too) but im not harping as im really enjoying the experience of making my first training DVD. Hopefully it will do well and I will make a series of these.
The final beach shoot is on the 27th December, that will finish the shooting. By then the rest of the DVD will be edited so we will just need to edit the beach part. My designer (the same guy who designed my website) is hard at work on designing the new DVD cover, DVD insert, web page, advertisements and the DVD menus. Its all steam ahead!!
Once this is done the "Beta" testers will receive their copy (five local people I know and trust very well), they have a week to get back to me with feedback. Then the final master will be made and sent to the printers for duplication.
So based on all this happening in timely fashion, the DVD should be ready to ship by the end of January. I should have an ordering page up by the end of December. Thats the time frame. At first im just going to accept paypal and credit card over the phone, but as funds start to come in for the DVD I will expand the website to be able to take credit card direct too. I am anticipating orders will start shipping out to people early February. Every available minute is being spent working on this DVD. Im trying to get it out as fast as I can, but i don't want to compromise quality for the sake of a few extra weeks either.
One last question, for the Americans amongst us, what is the most popular photography magazine in the USA?

So what's on your shelf Dwight....
Software manuals and self-teaching guides, most of which I don't have time to look at, sigh. I keep replacing the old version with the new version, shuffling the old version off to others less fortunate, but still no time to get to the new version. I've had the last four or five versions of PS and books about them and am still using PhotoImpact. I gotta take a seminar to bootstrap myself up but my calendar is full as far as I can see. Being too successful can really rob one of the time to learn and develop expertise and excellence, sigh.
Jason Cole
11th of December 2007 (Tue), 20:11
Yeah i know with the copy protection there really isn't much i can do about it, but i guess thats just how it goes. Hopefully I will see enough units to make doing some more titles worthwhile. All the pirates ever really do is hurt themselves in the long run. They might rip off a free copy but in the end they don't get anymore DVD's produced. The other good thing is that not everyone knows how to download a BT either, so that might help.
Maybe people might be a bit more hesitant to upload it to the net if i can make them realize im doing this on my own, im not a big company, all the production costs are coming direct from me, so if i dont at least make back what it costs me, there definitely wont be another one.

I'm not an expert, but I always hear that it all comes down to marketing. From the looks of it so far, you have an awsome project and I truly can't wait to watch it, so if you put half the effort into marketing that you have put into the production... An update on the DVD. Its looking amazing!!!
It "might" actually be a two DVD set now... too much information to fit on one DVD... around 3 hours of footage and tips now...
I will be putting up a few more snippets shortly... how cool does this look... awesome video production team.. its definitely going to be the most detailed DVD of its kind... and its polished too.. looks really professional..
VERY excited after another two days of editing.....!!!!
P.S. The Out-Takes section is a hoot too.... there is this one scene with Stacey where i tell her to move her hat, but it was on backwards... and she is looking for the tip of the cap.. priceless.... lol

Thanks man, its looking good, still a ways to go yet, but its looking good...
So much information in the DVD, maybe even a little bit too much.. im trying to pack as much as i can in there so people get maximum value for their money. I would hate for someone to buy it and say they wasted their money (even more so after all the work I have put into it!!), its very much on my mind at the moment, I want it to be awesome value for money... thats my goal. I WANT THIS TO BE THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO SHOOTING GLAMOUR AND GETTING STARTED!
So far we have done five full days editing and five full days shooting...
Thats on top of the months planning the DVD, the diagrams, the photos, the tips, the naming trademarks, the contracts, the lawyers, the printing, the website.. and all the other stuff that goes into a successful product.
Im not sure I would have even started it if I knew how much work was in it (I would have put it off a dozen times!), but now im glad I did and im really excited about seeing the finished product :-)
If it sells well we will definitely do a series of DVD's all about Glamour (and most likely about Wedding photography too, as thats another area where we have done really well).
In the meantime my book, "The passion of the Art - The Business of Photography" is on hold, i just dont have any more hours left in my day anymore.. the average day in my life is around 16-18 hours... no more time left :-)
Once the DVD is out, the book is next :-)

DVD UPDATE - GOOD & BAD NEWS!
Hi All,
Well the DVD is coming along nicely, we have a new trailer that shows you much more about the DVD. There is also a fair bit of footage from the intro to see.
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=cei9Cha3i5E
Please rate the video on UTube to help me get more hits on it :-) (if you like it!)
Looks smick (even if i do say so myself). Thats the good news.
The bad news is the DVD will be a little later. I am looking at a March timeframe (being realistic) for having a finished product ready to send out. Its been a LOT bigger project than I first thought, but its going along very well, there is a wealth of information in it. It looks like the DVD will now be a two DVD set. Thats not for sure, but its looking that way now.
So once again sorry for the delay, but this will be the last one, and the final product will be well worth it :-)
Have a good new years everyone :-)

I also like the way you phrased everything about shooting, how there's more to it than just shooting beautiful women. You hit the nail right on the head. Freezing a moment in time. I know I have a lot to learn from your DVD. Thanks A lot!

Well, that's some good news ... I would buy it but I don't have time to watch it right now ... I've got a bunch of DVDs sitting in my in queue to watch from PPA as it is ... March is looking better for that and then it'll be Spring here and I'll be looking at a 1DsMIII and maybe finally that portable battery pack ... so this is a big improvement on timing for me! You could delay it until June if you like ... that would be perfect! But like I say, I'll buy it when it's available.

DVD UPDATE
Morning all, just letting you know that after another three full days of editing the first section of the DVD is complete!!! We have now finished the Intro, equipment section, the garage (four scenes) and some other stuff about shooting. 1:40 minutes of footage so far... still have the beach and studio shoots to edit.. but the first one was well the longest part, the other two shoots are much quicker shoots.
We have another three days next week of editing too... at this rate we will meet our deadlines above. We also need to send out the first draft to the reviewers once we have finished the entire DVD. All in all the project is now well back on track and moving along nicely!! :-)
The ordering page, DVD covers, website and legal stuff should be finished in the next two to three weeks too. All steam ahead!

Hey Guys,
A couple of quick things...
The editing is going aling very nicely now, two more edit days and the dvd will be finished 1st draft, its been a very long process, far more time consuming than i first though, but its a personal milestone that i am finally achieving too. A good part of the delay has been "Wedding season" here too, i simply havent not had the time to do much on it this last few weeks. Anyways we have booked in solid time now to get it finished (without rushing it).
Also postage and packaging for the DVD is going to be $5 per order. I really wanted to include this in the initial pricing but the cost of shipping overseas to some countries is much more than i thought. The good news is the DVD is now a double DVD dvd, over three hours footage (estimated) on the DVD... this will be the definitive guide to shooting Glamour.
The last hurdle I have to overcome is the Beta testers, im sending out several first draft copies to the beta testers to check over and provide feedback. Once i get the feedback the dvd will be updated and shipped.

26th of January 2008 (Sat), 16:16
$5 hardly seems like enough for shipping and handling ...the initial pricing must have been way too high! Of course, by the time you finally get this thing out inflation/recession will have doubled the cost in the USA versus the Australian pound.
