HI

I've decided to buy Manfrotto 682B Monopod for use with my 30D and Siogma 50-500.

Plerase suggest which ball head will work/suit best to carry the abover load out of following Ball heads :

484RC2
486RC2
488RC0
488RC2
490RC4

My decision depends on your positive suggestions/advises.

How do you intend to use the monopod?

Do you intend to use it with any other lenses or just the 50-500?

How heavy is the 50-500?

It could be that NO head on the monopod would be the most suitable setup, depending on how you anticipate using it. If you are going to 1) use only the 50-500 and 2) are just planning on the classic vertical monopod position with you standing vertically behind it and 3) are planning on always shooting with the lens roughly parallel to the ground, the tripod ring on the lens may provide all the rotational movement you need.

That said, I use a 486RC2 on my 680B monopod. However, I use it with a variety of lenses - one with a tripod ring and the others without. I use it in a variety of positions - standing, sitting, etc., with the shaft of the monopod at many angles to the axis of the lens.

Hi Skip

50-500 is approx. 1.9Kg in Weight.

I'm not clear about Tripod ring, I assume you mean Tripod collar provided on the heavy lenses.

I've only two lenses Sigma 17-70 and 50-500 but occasionally I use my Sigma 2x TC as well with my 50-500 (adding a weight of another 700 Gms.)

So the total weight will not exceed 3.5 to 4 Kg in any case.

Please advise.

I believe he's referring to the fact that the ring is adjustable and the friction can be setup so that a simple turn of the adjustment knob let's you go from horizontal to vertical in an instant by allowing the lens (and attached body to turn inside the ring.
