I bought a S500 last week and I'm hearing a lot of clicking when I press the shutter button down half way. I'm expecting a little faint noise as the camera tries to focus but this amount of noise seems excessive. Does your camera make a rapid clicking sound when the shutter button is halfway depressed? It's even louder when in normal mode as opposed to fast shot mode. It sounds like the teeth on the little gears inside the lens are just stripping. I have never heard a digital camera make this noise and I hope that this one is broken because if it's not, then this camera makes too much noise.
Can someone offer there experiences with the S500 in terms of noise?
Thanks,
Scott

Hello, anyone out there? I can see that a lot of people have viewed this. How about you S400 owners? Any noise as described above? I think it's pretty much the same camera right?
Anyway, please respond folks.

I do hear a faint, rapid clicking sound when I prefocus, but it's not particularly loud.

There is a faint rapid ticking noise but it's more an electronic sounding one than mechanical. That's normal my old canon had the same sound. If you're getting a harsh mechanical sound with some kind of vibration then I'd say it's having problems.

My Ixus (S) 400 makes that rapid clicking noise which you describe. As far as I can recall, it has always made it and it's about 15 months old now.
I shouldn't worry about it.

i have the S410. it makes a *slight* noise, but its nothing i would have thought would be a problem. so if yours is loud enough that you think its a problem, maybe it is?

Ixus 500 owner here! The focus on mine does make a whirring sound for a second before the 'focussed' beep sounds. Not clicking exactly, more like the sound a cricket makes on a summer evening.
Hope that is all you are experiencing because thats normal.

The noise you are hearing is perfectly normal, mine does the same also while focussing.

oh, go on then, i'll join the "mine too" brigade
I think the "crickets in the evening" description is the best i've "heard" :D
