What's the primary use gonna be?
IMO you can afford a dSLR with a decent set of lens to go with it.
Are you taking some kind of class? Or is it just a hobby camera? Are you gonna need specific requirements like a 50mm prime? Also make sure that you class actually allows digital cameras.
I'd get:
DRebel with kit = 1000
70-200 f/4 L = 550
50mm f/1.8 = 70
512 mb Memory card = 100
2 Extra battery = 20
Card reader (can do without) = 20
Decent tripod = 200 to 300
or
some kind of flash... depending on what you need.
Or you can go with 10D body which is better, but you'll have to give up 70-200 L and that's a really sharp lens.
Don't buy a card more than 10x writing speed for the rebel, cause it does not make the camera any faster.

... your calculation is not up to date ... Adorama has the DRebel kit for $ 869 ....
I think it might be even cheaper in other places, but you might want to buy it from a reputable source.
... also, too much on the tripod IMHO, there are decent Manfrottos available for $ 150.
Best regards,
Andy

True. He may even afford a 550 EX if he stretches a bit then.
Good for him.

How would it be to be a "student" with a $2000 camera budget!!!! Mine has never been that high and I have been out of college for 15 years now!
