I bought my firs L lens this morning... I spent $700 on a piece of glass...
No ground shipping for me... 2nd day air !!! couldn't wait that long.
Oh, by the way it's the 17-40 f/4 L
Now I'm poor again... really poor. But that's okay... because in about 2 days, I'll start wearing a red stripe around my neck :D
....$700

Once you've tried the 17-40 L, you'll quickly forget about the pain in your wallet..... :) it's a great lens, I've never heard anybody complain about it at all. 8)

There is a bright side ... I paid over $800 about a year ago which naturally means the price was going to drop. It did!
Enjoy it and Good luck with it! It's a "L" of a lens

Have fun with your new great lens.
I´ll catch up with you that´s for sure! :P

Well, judging by your little collection, I am stepping on grounds you've been walking for a long time :D
I'll bring back some good colors, contrast and sharpness ;)

I'm really torn, is it worth it buying over the 18-55.
It's not any wider, it's not all that much faster.
I often think my money would be better spent elsewhere.

is it worth it buying over the 18-55.
According to my research and the reviews (&other material) I read it is.

Yeah, i've seen some compairisons but if i spend that kind of money on a wide lens i'd really perfer it to be a tad wider and a little faster.
For me at least, many of the better wide angle shots are with very high contrast low light situations.

As in, a 16-35 f/2.8 L? Umm... that's about twice the price.
What's your deffinition of "wide angle shots". For me, many of the better "wide angle shots" are landscape photographs, and I haven't seen many of those taken at f/2.8 ...

yeah i know that lens is way out of my price range really for what it is.
As for my def. of wide angle shots. I take landscapes every once and a while, but 75% of the time that i pull out a wide angle it's in a room full of people with low light.

That's on my top 2 lens I want to get next to the 70-200IS F2.8. I would use the 17-40 for landscapes which I'm not getting great results right now with my 28-135IS. It's not terrible, but it could be better and I would bet that landscapes would look great with this lens and the 10D or reble.
Unless it's a really big room, I'm finding I have to stop that apature down just to get good DOF so the speed wouldn't matter for me indoor anyway. But being wide, the DOF should not be as shallow too which I think would be a bonus for shooting indoor (how much I have not calculated).
You wouldn't happen to have the 28-135IS do you? I would love to see a side by side on a landscape at about F22 and F8 so I can convince the wife that it would be worth getting.

I handled my first L lens last Saturday, and it just happened to be the 17-40L :) Unfortunately, my other lenses now feel like rubbish to me. :( Tom, you need to get a 16-35L so I can buy your 17-40.

sounds like you guys like this lens. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna fall in love with that red stripe too :)
toddb, I don't have the 28-135. Only other wide angle lens I own is the 18-55 lens.

Hi cmM,
Yeah its a long and expensive road but very worth travelling. The only problem I found with this sig file is that its not long enough to put in that they are all canon and most are gLass. However, I do have to say that it's not the equipment that makes a good photographer, but hell, it sure helps.
Now that you have a "real" red stripe, if you want a laugh, have a look around and see how many other manufacturers are putting red stripes on their lenses.
Best Regards and happy shooting

Don't worry, Chris. The first $700 is the hardest. In a while, you'll be throwing money around like a drunken sailor. Your next step is to sell the car and buy a big white lens.
We've all been there.

What is the best place to buy it?

I bought it from B&H.
So far, I have only used it for test shots and such.
I'll be out tomorrow all day shooting so I will let you know.

Thanks, Kinger. I'm waking up tomorrow before the crack of dawn and I will come back after sunset. Need to test this baby out. I gotta tell though, that so far, this lens feel BEST out of all. L build is unmatched.
