I feel like this has to have been covered once before but I wasn't able to find a thread where it was. If someone can show me one that would be awesome and mods feel free to delete this. If however this is new, here is my problem. A few times already my camera has said that it was full with only 100 or so pictures on the card. I fully emptied the card out yesterday and it said I could only take 80 or so pictures. My first reaction was to reformat the card but I don't want to lose my photo-count. Its been continuous since day one. Is that my only way to get the space back or is there something else I can do? The card is a 2GB PRO 150x RiDATA CF card. Thanks for the help and sorry again if this is a repost.

You are probabely near the 9999 mark (or is it 999 on an Xti). After that the camera will crate a new folder and continue filling that up. (starting with 0000 again)

Edit: Thought about it again, and I'm not sure if the counting works that way on the Rebel series.
Another possibility is, that there's still images on the card. (In the thrash for example). The camera won't show them then, but they do take up space.

Reformat the card in camera. You won't loose the photo count.

You have to reformat. Just deleting the pictures doesn't clean up the FAT properly and you gradually appear to lose space over time. As mentioned, you won't lose your image numbering by formatting the card.

My routine is, download the pictures, make sure they are backed up, delete everything on the card and then format the card in the camera.
Never had a problem.

Not sure about the Rebel series, but on my 10D & 30D I can reformat the card many times & picture count does not reset. I believe there is a setting I can change to reset count or continue it, & one to manually reset.

What's the big deal about formatting your card? I do it every time I empty it. But there is hidden data that takes up space when you don't format so the choice is yours.

I've never noticed the picture count resetting though.

If the camera's set to Continuous file numbering, it won't lose the numbering when you insert a new blank (formatted externally) card. It'll only reset if you have the numbering set to "Auto reset".

awesome, thanks a lot for your help. I will try that when I finish class for the day. On another note though, people are much nicer to n00bs on this forum then on my Subaru one haha

Formating the card doesn't reset an XTI . I use , swap about 6 cards [ 512 , 1, 2 , and 4 gig . the next picture is numbered after last on whatever card I am using .
Get another card - you need at least a spare .

haha. this forum is probably one of the nicest I've been a part of indeed! well moderated in my opinion.

btw i should add that macs when saving anything, tend to write extra .xxxx files into your drive. i know it probably isnt the case here but that stuff is invisible and fills up your drive until put on a pc to clear it up.

again probably not related to your situation but say i save a file call kaitanium.PDF to my flash drive, the mac will write another useless invisible file to the drive called .kaitanium.pdf or something.

those . files are invisible if you look at your drive on a mac (unless there is a way to see them) but if you put them on a pc and select see hidden system files and such in the folder options youll be able to see them and delete them, otherwise they take up space and youll wonder why your drive is still full when you have deleted everything already

but you dont use a mac do you? if not, then no worries.

Something else that you might want to check is your ISO setting. Depending on what ISO you are using, the file sizes change. ISO 100 would be the smallest file size allowing the most pictures to be on a card and ISO 1600 pictures are the largest file size. I just don't know off hand what kind of difference it makes and I am not near my camera at this time.

You may be having problems with the card. Get yourself another. And don't buy it from eBay.
