i just got the 300f4 IS. lens is nice and sharp, but the IS is making noise as it engages and dis engages. sound like a spring inside clicking(sort of). it's not real loud, but you can certainly hear it. maybe more of a ping than a click. i know the lens is supposed to activate the IS when you half press the shutter, but should you be able to hear it? the only other IS lens i had was the 28-135, and it made no noise (i'm not talking about the focus noise). the lens makes no noise with the IS off. could someone
shed some light on this for me?

thanks

I don't have that lens.. but I have a few IS lenses and they all make noise when they spin up.. or disengage..

The sound differes from lemns to lens.. each has it's own set of gyro thingies and adjustment optics.

thanks for the reply CDS, i understand the operation. just wasn't sure i was supposed to be able to hear it. wanted to make certain it was normal while it's still new. i'm feeling a little better now. :D

I concur with CDS. I have three IS lenses, the 100-400, 70-200 and 28-135 and they all act/sound different. They clunk, twang and whir. Just put the lens through its paces to be sure and I'm confident you'll be fine.

Eric:
I do have the 300 f/4, and it is a little noisier than the other IS lenses I own.
