View Full Version : Ok ONE more question about contiuous focus in creative modes

I really hope this isn't a RTFM question, because I've read it and I'm not finding what I'm looking for. In the 'sports/action' preset mode, the focus is continous, something I'd obviously want for my track shooting. Can I make the camera do this in Av or Tv mode vs. focus locking on the half-depress? I'm running the firmware 'update' but didn't find anything under custom parameters.

That's the last question until the motorsports event. If I can get that to work nothing will be able to stop me!

Thanks,
Adam

You have two cameras listed. Which are you intending to use?

Sorry about that. Question is related to the Digital Rebel. From what I've read, it only enables the constant focusing on the 'sport' preset mode, however I was wondering if the latest 'hack' unlocks this feature.

Thanks,
Adam

Adam, there are ai servo hacks for the Dreb. i don't know how well they work though. most people are satsfied with the hacks, but you will be voiding your warranty. there is some risk when doing this.

The hack does give a little more useful functions, however the AI Servo
mode it adds is the one function that currently does not work. So as of right now, the answer is no. You cannot have continuous focus in any other mode other than sports mode. There are several tricks you can try.
Here is the link so you can read up on them (scroll about half way down the page to the "other useful tips section".

Thanks guys.... I guess once this crazy Russian gets the AI Servo fixed for creative modes, I'll be perfectly satisfied with the DRebel. So far the hack has increased my enjoyment of the camera and has been 100% flawless.

Speaking of that link, I loaded the .CCF file up and added it to my Philips Pronto TSU3000 remote, and now I have a perfectly functional remote shutter release and timed release for the camera... too cool! (If not a little big, but good for home shots) I'm going to go on a quest to find a VERY small (keychain size) learning remote that can be taught the codes from my Pronto for the Canon remote shutter release, and then I'll be in business. If we can do that we'll have a perfectly good replacement for the wireless remote for our camera, and we can probably get them for I'm guessing less than $10 each. I'll be working on that for everyone.

Get the hack.
Officially it voids the warranty but if you do have to send it back just flash back the official firmware.
There are many reports of people sending cameras back to Canon with the hacked firmware, and Canon either didnt notice, or didnt care.

This summer I was shooting some diving, and have no full time AF Servo drove me crazy. So, I installed the hack, and now the AF Servo works beautifully for me! The only hiccup is that when you fully press the shutter to take the shot, the camera won't fire. So, the work around is to quickly lift your finger, and then fully press the shutter. I do this all the time and haven't missed a shot because of it. It is very quick and seemless (for me atleast).
Also, I have yet to see any report of this firmware causing any damage to a camera. In fact, almost everyone that tries it loves it!

If that works for you that's great. What you are actually doing by releasing the shutter button is halting any automatic focusing action. Then when you re-apply your finger the camera tries to once again focus. Since the first shot of AI servo is release priority, the camera will take the picture, even if the subject is not in focus. You are in essence using the hacked AI servo to pre focus. This will not work well for subjects moving quickly away from you or towards you, but will probably work ok for things moving laterally.

I used it at a marathon with runners approaching me. No problems at all!
Worked perfectly.
