I need opions do you guys think a good canon 70-200 2.8 with a 1.4 tele will be better image quality and speed wise at night for football than a good sigma 100-300 f4 at night footie game both lens will be used with a flash on a bracket.

If you are buying new the two options are comparable in price. All the reivews and pictures I've seen; both look around the same image quality. The only advantage of the f/2.8 is you can take off the TC and get that extra stop of light if you need it.

If you are thinking used; the Sigma can be had for almost half the price since the Cannon's seem to hold most of their value.

Personally, if you don't need the extra stop I'd get the Sigma used.

THX for the quick reply I quess what I am trying to say is will the sigma preform at night better the same or worse because it does not have to deal with the converter or does that make any differance to the camera (Using 30D) I have both set up's and trying to figure which one to take to the game friday night with lugging both into the stadium. I am in an electric wheel chair so carrying space is limited.

I use the Canon 70-200 2.8 with the 2x TC.
I am pleased with the results...
Its not spectacular but its sharp and it still produces a very fine image....

What kind of night football? The higher the level, the better the stadium lighting seems to be. So far, I've drawn the short end of the light stick! With a Canon 20d, ISO 3200, Sigma 70-200 at f/2.8, shutter speeds were 1/500th sec and lower. The last field was hopeless unless flash was used, which I did.

With that said, I don't think any combination that yields f/4 would work very well, unless the lighting is outstanding.

Good luck. Maybe some other football shooters will chime in.

F4 is no good at high school football. 2.8 at 1600 or 3200 is as good as it gets. The 70-200 is plenty without the converter. Get the 70-200

don't put the flash on a bracket....mount it on your monopod below the camera.
I honestly never use flash....but I have seen good results with this setup
