A bit of focus stacking practice on a springtail. Taken from head-on a 14 shot stack. Not sure I like the outcome- makes for a very odd DOF-trail across the pic. Nowhere near Irwin's mammoth cactus stacks but not bad for a bug :)

Hi MJ I didn't have to realign this one but it would have been very difficult because of the DOF coverage (ie finding two identifiable spots in each of the pics) but normally I go for bright specular highlight spots where you can tell where the middle of them is even when they are OOF.

That's one stacking error that's easy to correct but didn't need to in this one. ;)

Nice stack Brian.
If you look hard enough at the OOF trail, it is possible to visualize a ridge where the springtail is standing... :)

That could make a difference because I'm sliding the end of the lens on the surface. If the mT-24 fixing makes the end of the lens wider then you are going to be shooting at a much higher angle.

Thanks Bernie - you are right- someone else mentioned that- trouble is I know the surface was flat :)

Cool picture, but as you say it looks pretty unnatural with the DOF ending so abruptly in both ways.
Cool and impressive anyway.

yes..i think he was just showing me how good of a pic u can get form not relining your pics and just stacking them..not sure if u have seen his work..its 2nd to none..
i need that flash bracket for the mt-24ex that delantech has..this way i can get my flash off my lens and il be able to try and get to grips with this focus stacking.

Sebastien - yes it does look odd in this pic because of the detailed substrate, deep stacks can work well though with flowers etc where the background is OOF anyway.
Bill assume you still have this problem not being able to load the pics ?
Have you tried using combinez5 instead- It has less exacting requirements - you just need to make sure that the dll file they talk about is in the install folder.
