View Full Version : Image Recovery Software - recommendations?

I've just successfully used the freeware version of Digital Image recovery to recover "lost" images on a 1Gb CF card in my 300d, and in the past salvaged a complete re-formatted CF card for a friend. In the case of the lost images (see my 300d storage problem thread) about 90% were restored as perfect jpg files, but a few came up as "tif" or "bmp", which were viewable in Breezebrowser, but neither of which were readable (and therefore not editable or printable) in PS7. I managed to convert the viewable images from those "tif" or "bmp" unreadable files using BB's "proof" feature, and the images are usable but not the full resolution. I have no idea what has gone on with these!

I've had good results from DIR, and can't complain as it was free (!) but perhaps there's better software available and I'd like to try again on my lost images before I re-format the card. When I salvaged my friend's card last year, I tried a commercial package (photorescue?) and it was much less successful than DIR.

So - any suggestions or recommendations?

Thanks
Nigel

PC Inspector File Recovery. I used it once or twice. Free.

I use File Rescue Plus from Software Shelf. It does the job, and can do batch recoveries. Not restricted to image files or CF/othere typical digital media..

Photorescue is the best software for recovery of data, mainly because it will keep RAW data intact with the THM's.

I tried other free photo recovery software, but none of them could handle RAW data.

On Bob's suggestion I tried PCinspector - they have 2 programs, File Recover (any type of disc/file format) and Smart Recover (for image formats), both are freeware, both have a full graphc interface. I used Smart recover and it got all the images off the card, with no corruption and no truncated images or unreadable "tif" or "bmp" as I'd got with Digital Image Recovery (old freeware version). It claims to read CRW files, but I didn't try that - I will now, though! In fact it was so effective I will probably send a donation. It is worth looking at the website, very professional, and I was surprised that it's freeware.
