Hi Everybody,
I'm new here, going by the name monsieurhappy - no, I'm not French. Anyway, I need to know about flash for my new 300D. Got it yesterday and don't want to wreck it just yet. My old camera was an EOS 1000FN circa. 1994 with a Tamron 28 - 200 zoom and Cobra 700AF flash. I'm pretty sure the lens will be OK on the 300D, but even though I've done a search in the forums, I can't find any info about the Cobra 700AF. I bought it at the same time I bought the 1000FN but can't remember ever using it. It is Canon dedicated. Can anyone give me advice please? Thanks in anticipation. monsieurhappy :P :P

I've never heard of the Cobra 700AF flash, but you should certainly be careful. Canon cameras are made for a certain voltage on the flash hot shoe (6V I think?). Some non-Canon flashes use much higher voltages and can damage the electronic circuit of the camera. Worse, it's even possible that it doesn't burn the camera immediately, so the flash seems to work, but when you use it for a longer time, the camera might get damaged.

So, if you're not sure and can't find any info on it, better not use it... :?

The lens should be fine.

I recently sold an EOS dedicated cobra 700AF, before I did I had a chance to test it on the 10D. It did fire, but at full power only (I think). I would recommend not using it if you want well exposed flash photographs. Maybe consider gerring either the 420Ex or 550Ex or if you want good value the Sigma DG500

Thanks Guys,
I'm not a big flash user, hence I don't think I ever used the flash before, so I'll probrably give it a miss until I can afford a Canon.
