Hi again,
Forgot this question in my last post. In the instructions for the 300D it says the Kit lens - EF-S 18-55 can only be used on a digital camera. Now I probrably will never use film again, but on the other hand if I needed some pics. with a wide angle I was wandering if I could use this lens on my old EOS 1000FN without any damage. Sorry if this question has been asked before. Monsieurhappy

No. First, it won't fit (extends too far in the camera body). Second, it's designed with the smaller sensor of the DR in mind, so it wouldn't cover a whole frame of 35 mm. film.

the mount can be modified to fitt it on there, but, as mentioned above, it won't cover the entire frame.

Hi cmM,
The other problem, as previously mentioned, is that it extends to far into the body of the camera. Doesn't sound like a problem? Well let me put it like this, the back of the lens sits in the same space that the mirror passes through when you take a picture. Press the shutter release button, camera goes "thunk" as the mirror slides up and gets friendly with the back of the lens. Scratches to the rear element of the lens and damage to your mirror, sheeesh what a nightmare. Do not try this, do not do it, dont even think about it.
best regards

I know... I am not about to try it. I have a Rebel ;)
But I have read about people modifying the mount, and It's a stupid solution, I agree, I'm just saying that it's possible. I think there was also some kind of solution for the mirror banging against the lens... don't remember exactly though.
monsieurhappy, search this board for this topic and you will find some debates on it.

Hi cmM,
Yeah my guess would be that they used one or both of the extention rings to move the lens forwards, which removes your ability to focus at infinity and also makes your lens appear slightly longer, ie instead of 18-55 its becomes 22-60 (not sure what the numbers are this is just an example).

The EF-S lens cannot be used on any normal DSLR camera, such as D60, 10D, etc. At present, the only camera that EF-S will fit to is the Digital Rebel, a.k.a. 300D.

You CAN chop the back off your kit lens -if you are game
I have used a modified one experimentally on a film camera. At the widest angles where it is most usefull it will both hit the mirror unless it is locked up AND it simply doesn't cover the full frame
Here is an example pic @ 18mm on a film camera (mirror lock up used so it can't damage anything)

Basically there is a simple solution-sell the kit lens and buy a cheap sigma, etc wide zoom that WILL work on both your film and digital bodies. The image quality will be very similar
