So far I've been using ETTL with a blue/green reversible background for portraits with much success.

I'm planing to add a black/white background to my arsenal and I realize I need more control. Exposure compensation might get me through some of it but probably not too far. Example: I might need to expose the background differently.

If there's a way to tell the flash power used by ETTL for each of the flashes being used, it might help to adjust accordingly in manual setting to get desired results. Is there a way to tell?

PS. I forgot to mention that I'm saving up for a really good flash meter (sekonic 558 or something similar) but it might be sometime before I have it.

I guess not, huh?

Nope no way of knowing what fraction of max power when in ETTL control, only when used in Manual at a fractional setting!
