i have 2 EOS 10D's both bought in the last year. I had the forst cleaned 5 months ago by the idiots at the Canon distributor here in Spain. first it came back dirtier than when i sent it, then, having returned it to be done properly, when it came back the LCD didnt work.

Anyway, I digress a little. I have just sent the same camera back to have the CMOS cleaned again and they now want 400 euros to replace the CMOS filter. Does anyone know if they are pulling my wire or not? The front of the camera is only ever open for about 0.5 of a second while i change lenses and as stated above has been cleaned recently.

Can anyone help?

Cheers

The CMOS filter is the transparent film on top of the sensor. If it was damaged and had to be replaced, then it was probably damaged by whomever cleaned the sensor. That is either the distributor or else you.

how do you change/ remove lenses in 0.5 seconds, that's rally fast ehh
jokes apart, jsut two days ago I cleaned my CMOS myself first time. I just followed the links provided by this wonderful forum , where by the way I learned that sending it to Canon could even make it worse (and your case is reenforcing that). why I am telling you this ? it's just to say that I used a plastic swab 1.5cm large that I made myself. first time, naturally I was very scared and very gentle , but no dirt came out of the CMOS, then I started pushing harder and harder, , it needed some gentle but effective swabing to get rid of all the dirt, thanks god it''s like new now (methanol, kodak cleaning sheets ($4/100 ) and a plastic swab).
SO my friend, try to be convincing and make them (at canon) responsible of what happened to your CMOS (you said they cleaned it). just try to be aware of what you say and what you ask for, it should work and replaced maybe for free
good luck

Are they trying to change a part that may not REALLY need changing?
Maybe they think you are fussy?
My 300D came from the factory with scratches on the sensor filter  .They are so fine that i didn't even see them until i shone a huge searchlight in there to see if i had to clean the sensor yet. They don't show in the pictures but they can be made to show up @ tiny apertures,100% enlarged onscreen and contrast turned up alot.
Maybe your's has such minor damage that they THINK you might like replaced?
Best to talk with them first
....THEN blow them up :)

1) I hear motor noises in my 50mm f/1.8 when in MF mode
2) My "exchanged" 50mm f/1.8 doesn't autofocus at all
3) The G1s turn bottom up with the lens extended. Canon charges the repair costs
4) Sensors come back scratched. This isn't the first complaint I've seen...

As one my acquaintance would say: "what's up yo man!?!?!"
