I am currently toying with the idea of picking up a G9 camera. I am thinking about getting one for when I ski and when I scuba dive or when I just dont want to carry my SLR around.
Is the G9 capable of freezing action shots? If I took pictures of friends in the terrain park when we are skiiing would I have a huge shutter delay and miss the shot? Would I be able to freeze my subject? Obviously this could be achieved with my XTi but I dont want to carry it around on the slopes. Last year I just brought my Sony P&S with me & it had a lag time of about a full second before it took a pic.
Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Hmm....I just got my G9. I haven't gotten a chance to do this yet. I know that it stinks under low light but then again what P&S really kicks butt under low light. I know that some Fuji's are ok under low light but I have yet to see this. Nevertheless, I don't see why it won't freeze action, I would probably try to go under shutter priority.

Don't use the LCD and you will be fine. Shoot TV or M mode and set a fast sutter speed.

Depends...
Any P&S has too much shutter lag for true action photography. However, if you prefocus (half press of shutter button) on where you think the target will be, then you can do *ok*. Not great, but ok.
You will be much better if your subject will be at a known place in time. If it is not known where they will be (think field sport like soccer), you will go absolutely nuts trying to catch the action.
In general most action photography is best handled with dslr which has much, much, (if any for all intents and purposes) less shutter lag.
If you don't use the half press trick, you will have a lot of photos with just the tails of the skis in the picture (if that) because of the delay from the time you depress the shutter button to when it actually fires.

I recently went to a rally (should have taken my SLR really) the weekend after getting my G9.
While I wanted to use manual or tv mode, the lag was too great using the screen, however, using the "action" mode in the scenes produced some good results for a p&s.

Not bad for action shots on the G9 based on your rally pictures! I'm pretty amazed that it did that.

...is that what happens to MKI and MKII Escorts at the end of their 'public road life'?
I learned to drive in them cars. Wonderful machines.
