It's a manual focus macro lens, not a telephoto.

I don't have one but at one point I did a bunch of research into it when I thought I would be getting into macrophotography (or is it photomacrography?).
First thing, it's technically not a manual focus lens. It's a manual magnification lens. Twisting the barrel is akin to adjusting a built-in extension tube. This changes the magnification. It will also change the plane of focus, too.
Second, to use this lens you really need a tripod-mounted focusing rail. The depth of field is miniscule, in the range of tenths of a millimeter!
Finally, you can find more information about this lens if you do a google search on "65mm mp-e". Beautiful Bugs (http://www.beautifulbugs.com) is a great place to check out.

I have & use that lens. It's not a telephoto (it's a macro lens), and it's not manual focus (meaning there's no focus ring - you focus by moving the entire camera/lens closer or farther from the subject).
Here are some photos...

Sounds like that makes it really manual focus
Interesting that Canon refers to it as a manual focus lens. http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=155&mode lid=7325 Perhaps to make sure that no one thinks that it is an AF lens.

Scott those are impressive. Did you use a rail to focus?

some addition:
it's a dedicated macro lens, cannot focus to infinity.
not like other canon macro lens, eg. EF 100mm macro, that also good for portraiture.
