can the 550EX flash be triggered by the built in flash if the 550ex isnt attached to the camera?

No. Not by themselves anyway. I suppose one might buy a second party trigger, one that triggers by light from a flash, and make the 550 work from the internal flash on an EOS.

The Canon 550EX in slave mode is designed to respond to a series of pulses from another 550EX or an STE2( a 420EX won't work). It also doesn't work well with optical slaves attached. You have to turn it off and on after each shot to recycle it. The only method I have found that works consistently other then using wireless ETTL is to buy a hot shoe adapter to Pocket Wizard miniplug cord from www.paramountcords.com . Then you use a Pocket Wizard set to trigger the flash like you would a studio strobe. The Hot Shoe adapter mounts to a light stand or flash bracket, the 550EX sits in the adapter and the miniplug goes into a Pocket Wizard receiver.
