I already have a tamrac 5519 toploader but i find the height too long when i just want to carrry these 3 items. Any recommendations for a bag that would just carry these? any kind of bag/case would be fine. thanks

If you can do without the battery grip, then the Tamrac Velocity 7 is perfect. Leave the bged3 home and carry an extra battery.

Thanks for your input scottbergerphoto, i would look into the velocity 7.
I would still prefer a bag/case that could fit the camera, grip and lens on the most compact way possible. I never took off the battery grip since the day i placed it on the camera -with my shooting needs, i prefer the grip to be on the camera. :)

How high is the 300D with the BG-ED 1?
the height from the base of the battery grip to the hot shoe is about 6 inches high.

The Tamrac Velocity 9 will fit it, but it won't be as svelte. You can also get a Tamrac Expedition 5 back pack.

Dunno if they make it anymore, but I had a Tamrac Explorer 2 bag for my D30 w/ BGED and 28-135 lens and it just fit. IT also fits my 10D, but I've got too many lenses now and upgraded to a Lowepro Trekker backpack.

Thanks Scott & Redbutt , i really appreciate your replies.
Scott,
I tried my friends' velocity 9 and yes it fits but it is almost similar to my 5519 Toplader's in "height" so i guess that's out.I also have the Expedition 3, which i used (i did not have the battery grip yet)before getting the 5519, it is a tight fit with the battery grip and thats why i shifted to my present 5519.
Redbutt,
I just checked the Tamrac site and the Tamrac Explorer 2 is also known as the Model 5202, i hope that our local Tamrac dealer carries them so that i could try if it fits my gear. I like the height (9 inches), compared to my 5519 with a height of 12 1/2 inches.

I was almost going to get the Velocity 9...but I already have a great Tamrac backpack and the Velocity looks pretty big. The Explorer depth is only 1/4 of an inch deeper, so I'm guessing you really have to force the 10D with grip in there? I guess I should not worry about taking the grip when I want to go light anyway. I want to get the velocity but I carry my daughter in a backpack so a shoulder bag would probably work out the best in my case. I wish they would make a version just a little deeper but keep the rest the same.

After looking between the Tamrac and Lowepro, it seems like allot of the Lowepro bags are deeper which would fit the big ed while it's still on the camera.
This Mini Mag AW is more expensive, but sure looks nice. http://www.lowepro.com/pages/series/proaw/minimag.htm

I just got a lowepro nova3 9W x 6D x 7.5H in. bag and i find the fit with my setup better than my toploader
toddb: i also checked out the velocity 9 and it was too"big" for my intended setup too.

That look almost the exact same size as the Lowepro Mini Mag AW. I have pretty much the same setup as you except the 10D so maybe one of these two bags are what I'm looking for.

toddb: just checked the mini mag aw, indeed it is very similar to the nova 3 that i got. Unfortunately, our local dealer did not have mini mag aw on stock so i was not able to make a comparison. I guess the nova 3 is just half an inch less wider. I think the mini mag offers more protection than the nova 3, has 2 straps on top (more secure?) than the single one of the nova3. Good luck on your choice of bag.

Thanks for posting your find, I think it will help me alot on narrowing down a good bag for this setup. I've been using a really old bag that just doesn't work and it's been driving me nuts. :-P

I have also been looking for a new bag for a while, and while my requirements are somewhat different (my bag needs to fit 10D, 28-135, 17-40L, 50/1.8, and a 550EX), I also looked at both the Mini Mag AW and the Nova 3. Our local store also didn't have the Mini Mag AW available, but they did have the Nova 3, which was a little too small for my purposes. My test was over a month ago so I'm not quite sure anymore as to how the bag was too small, I think I managed to fit most of the gear inside it but not all (probably one item didn't fit).
Therefore, if you're only trying to fit the 300D+BG-ED1+28-135, the bags might be a little larger than you need. This, of course, might not be a problem for you, but for myself, since I already have a Lowepro Orion AW, which houses the items nicely but is a little too large, I wanted to go as small as possible while still meeting the requirements. I haven't yet found "the bag", but haven't really looked of late. I did get a small lens pouch to fit either the 28-135 or the 17-40L alone, and now use it along with my Topload Zoom 2, which leaves the 550EX outside both bags. :-(

topeju, toddb - i guess we are all looking for the ideal bag/case that would carry our equipment as "compact" as possible, please update on your finds that has suited you. I am interested on what you would come up with.good luck

Alright, I got the Lowepro Mini Mag AW.
http://www.lowepro.com/pages/series/proaw/minimag.htm
It fits the 10D with the 28-135IS and the batt grip very well. Also included in the bag is my 50mm F1.8, the speedlite 550EX with the OmniBounce still attached (and server cases of batteries). This bag could easily fit a longer lens (I want to the the 70-200 and hoping it will slide in there very nicely...I hope).

The bag is a tank compared to my last "day bag". As you can see my older bag is as flimsy as a camera bag can get. I was actually afraid to take the camera places because I felt that I would be able to set the bag down anywhere without the camera being crushed by something. The Lowepro bag though is tough as nails and probably could take a fall off the counter with the camera in it. It's not called a "pro" bag for nothing. The shoulder strap is very comfortable.

Here is what in the bag right now so you can get an idea, and there is still plenty of room for bigger lens, but I'm glad that the 550EX fits so nicely and is easily retrievable.

A nice feature that I didn't even know it had is the rain cover. Kind of like those hoods in a coat that you pull out of the neck of the coat. Which is a plus leaving in the Seattle area.
http://www.toddburke.net/forumpost/CRW_4382.jpg
I'll still be using my Tamrac Pro 9 backpack because I can fit all my stuff in it, but this Lowepro is very nice for those zoo trips and shorter outings with the daughter on my back with the kid backpack.
http://www.toddburke.net/forumpost/CRW_4378.jpg
In conclusion, I'm very impressed with the quality of the bag, and it should be because it cost $85 compared to similar bags costing only about $45. But it's worth the extra money in my opinion. I'm quite sure that I'll still have it when I can afford that new 22MP camera, LOL. I think it will be a little big for those who want the very smallest possible bag...but I wanted small, yet a little room to grow. I think it will be hard to find a better small bag for the 10D with the grip attached because of the 6" needed in depth. I saw alot that would fit without it, but I like the grip too much and I'll eventually get the MarkII or 1Ds (I hope) someday.
I'll add this one more photo of the 28-135IS under where the camera would sit.

todd, i just measured the 28-135 and the 70-200 (the 2.8, not the 4).
The 28-235 is 4.5", while the other is around 8", and a bit thicker. Do you think the 70-200 could fit in there? (either on the camera or not)

Darn, doesn't look like that would fit. I didn't realize that 70-200 was THAT long. The bags height dimension is only 7.5". (9.5W x 6D x 7.5H)
Since you have the 28-135, I can tell you that if you fully extend it while on the camera, you'll just about touch the bottom of the bag. I have my 50mm f1.8 under to the right. In the Lowepro site, you could fit four extra lens like that IF you had lens as small diameter as the little 50mm f1.8. If you look at their site you'll see what I mean. (For those who want to have an idea of how big around these two lens are, the 50mm F1.8 uses 52mm filters and the 28-135IS uses 72mm filters)
I can easily fit the 28-135 where I'm putting the 50mm lens right now so if I want to use the 50, I can still put the camera back in the bag. The 28-135 AND the 50mm cannot fit together though on that same side under the camera...I'd have to remove the 550EX Speedlite. So I'd say the biggest lens on camera you could have is one that was about 5 1/4". I'll still be able to that the 70-200, the Tamrac Pro 9 could fit a 12" lens on camera.
